A sign of our times: New Orleans now has twice as much snow this winter as Anchorage, Alaska. Weather weirding on steroids, fueled by warm oceans.

We are in a climate emergency.

The Great North Road upgrade is a triumph for AT – whether the mayor likes it or not It's taken 10 years to even get to the starting line. Now, at long last, Grey Lynn is getting the road it deserves.

Sadly I don’t think we’ll see any other projects like this starting for a while…

Why petrol prices could soon top $3 a litre Things have been a bit pricier at the pump recently, and it is only expected to get worse.

NZ Govt has weakened fuel efficiency standards for vehicles, removed incentives for EVs, blocked funding cycleways, cut funding for public transport. Making NZ more dependent on fossil fuel imports - higher climate pollution, inflation, transport costs. Madness. www.stuff.co.nz/money/360547...

Really bold play to pass legislation that means all future legislation has to broadly vibe with your own party's agenda.

Just 57 companies linked to 80% of greenhouse gas emissions since 2016 Analysis reveals many big producers increased output of fossil fuels and related emissions in seven years after Paris climate deal

57 companies are responsible for 80% of global greenhouse gas emissions since 2016.

These companies include fossil fuel giants like Chevron, Shell, and BP, who have been raking in record profits.

The profits of Big Oil should not be more important than the future of our planet.

Ridgeline chart showing the distribution of global daily air temperature differences from the pre-industrial reference period (1850-1900), for every year between 1940 and 2024. Each individual year resembles a hill, shaded in a darker shade of red and further to the right for warmer years. The trend is clearly towards warmer years, with 2024 standing out as first year above 1.5C.

NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold.

We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940.

2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.

No, the world has not breached the 1.5C global warming target.

It’s a climate target - which means it’s an average that must be sustained over at least a decade.

We currently sit at 1.2 C. Which is already very bad.

The science is clear: every bit of warming matters, every action matters.

But in its panicked retreat from the system it spent years building, Meta may now be putting billions of users at risk. Just because Meta deleted that line about hateful speech causing offline violence doesn't mean it isn't true. And now the company has all but declared open season on immigrants, transgender people and whatever other targets that Trump and his allies find useful in their fascist project.

"I can't tell you how much harm comes from non-illegal but harmful content," a longtime former trust and safety employee at the company told me. The classifiers that the company is now switching off meaningfully reduced the spread of hate movements on Meta's platforms, they said. "This is not the climate change debate, or pro-life vs. pro-choice. This is degrading, horrible content that leads to violence and that has the intent to harm other people."

I talked to 10 current and former Meta employees about the company's surrender to the right on speech issues. All were upset. One person called the changes "a precursor to genocide" www.platformer.news/meta-fact-ch...

Everyone knows we hand in our best work on the last day.

The justice select committee must reopen submissions & parliamentary services must make sure the website is working.

Maybe if they didn’t make the submission period over Xmas break, it would’ve been easier for people.

A lot of the “free speech!” people seem to think their speech stops being free as soon as someone else is free to call BS

After I moved to Canada a couple of years ago I realized that I was no longer constantly running a massive stress routine in the background of my mind worrying about health care and guns. It was weirdly noticeable only when it stopped.

"Bluesky is awesome now, for how long?" I mean, look, all things change and end, we will all die, earth will be uninhabitable in a billion years, then the sun will expand and destroy the planet, and the universe will die a slow death of proton decay. But BEFORE THAT, let's make this place fun, okay?
