The marble & bronze sarcophagus memorial for Cardinal Pietro Foscari (d 1485) looks incongruous in the Costa Chapel, Santa Maria del Popolo, Rome

That’s because it was originally in the Foscari Chapel, which was demolished in 1600

The 1505 altarpiece by Gian Cristoforo Romano is also magnificent

The medieval Sistine Chapel” the Crypt of St Magnus beneath Anagni Cathedral contains vivid 13th century frescoes which really blew me away

So glad I backed my photos up to the cloud, my phone was stolen a couple of days later 🫳🏻🎒 😂🥲

The Church of Sant'Agata dei Goti (Saint Agatha of the Goths) in Rome features a Cosmatesque ciborium thought to be from the 13th century

It was reassembled from fragments in the 1920s

Absolutely agree! I wonder how the queues are at Santa Maria Maggiore, might pop in tomorrow and see if I can get a top down snap

So many beautiful things to see in Cologne, I wouldn’t presume to send you a list. But for further inspiration search my posts here and the app formerly known as Twitter for “Cologne” or even “Bonn” (as it’s very close and also nice)

Yes, perhaps my favourite museum, beautiful pieces and at a size that’s “manageable”

I find places like V&A, MANN in Naples, Altes Museum in Berlin etc just too big and overwhelming

Cracking font! I was just looking at my pics of this Rhenish example ca. 1200 earlier, the protruding faces are an interesting similarity
