The project started due to a chance encounter with Kevin and Erwin at the NBER CRIW summer institute in 2016. First draft was completed in 2018, and final version published in 2025! Happy to get this out.
This was a fun collaboration with @erikbryn.bsky.social, Erwin Diewert, @felixeggers.bsky.social and Kevin Fox (Author list: BCDEF :)).
otherwise, all we get is traditional goods leaving GDP (e.g. landline phone calls) as they're replaced by higher quality things that we value more but which don't appear in GDP because of having a zero price (e.g. free WhatsApp video calls).
Takeaway: Looking beyond traditional GDP is essential if we want to understand the impact of free digital goods on the economy,
