Jealous!

If you are too young to remember the Iraq War, you'll hear "no one protested" and "no one knew they were lying." Millions of people knew they were lying and protested. The press not only did not want a record of mass dissent; they did not want a record of mass knowledge of lies.

K2-18b. We urgently need to get our shit together about life detection — Girl & Kat We have not discovered life on K2-18b. We have not even discovered water on K2-18b. All we can say is that the planet does not… not… have an ocean.

Last time we all lost our minds over K2-18b 🔭 , I wrote this blog post. The summary is... don't.

Your aperiodic reminder that Mercury has a weirdly HUGE core for reasons we do not yet understand.

It's less a planet and more a molten ball bearing wrapped in a thin blanket of rock.

Vintage map of the Mississippi River Flood of 1927. The dark blue Mississippi meanders through the center of the map. Areas colored light green and light tan indicated the extent of the first and second floods, respectively. In some cases, the floodwaters extended 10 or 20 miles from the the river in Missouri, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Red crosses mark relief camps.

As storms bring record-breaking rainfall to the Midwest, this vintage map of the Mississippi River Flood of 1927 is a reminder of the crucial role the federal government in responding to & mitigating the effects of natural disasters. Map from the National Archives: www.archives.gov/publications...

Remember when they said "it's time to build" and then they made building things 50% more expensive?

I am deeply saddened by this Trump tax hike that increases costs on everything while also increasing the size of government by charging people more. I urge Colorado’s members of Congress on both sides of the aisle to reject these tariffs, which will raise the cost of groceries, housing, and more.

2. A memo distributed by NSA leadership to its staff says that on February 10, all NSA websites and internal network pages that contain banned words will be deleted.

Just to push back on my own "side" a little:

In ACOM, we don't argue settling Mars is impossible. There are no physical laws against it and all biological, even legal, problems are potentially solvable. It's just way harder than advertised, no obvious economic/society benefits, and not likely soon.

With the bend rightward of the tech universe, immigration appears to be a new internal fight. Populists tend to be anti. Tech/business people are almost always pro because they see the benefits personally and directly. But they're still under-rating so-called "low skill" immigration.

Yesterday I completed my challenge of winning a Civ game using each of the 43 leaders from the base game and expansion packs. I think I'm ready for Civ 7.

Meme: Panel from a vintage comic book: Robin (the Boy Wonder) begins to say “I like Daylight Saving—”. Batman (the World’s Greatest Detective) slaps him with the good-sense reply “No, you like summer!”

No law can turn winter into summer. Daylight Saving Time forces early waking, chronically deprives sleep. Permanent Standard Time aligns clocks to circadian rhythms for health! #DitchDST #SaveStandardTime #SleepHealth #MAHA

And for the record, the correct answer is "Standard Time year round" and "Yes, the plane can take off"
