When culture is enjoyed without acknowledging those struggles, it risks reproducing a colonial logic of consumption.
Yes, we dance and enjoy ourselves. But we also rage, resist, and fight.
It is also worth remembering that Latin America is not white. Reggaeton is Black, born in working-class neighborhoods, and much of what is celebrated today as culture arises from histories of Black resistance and from songs created by enslaved people.
Taking a stand is part of that relationship, including opposing U.S. intervention in the region, the revival of the Monroe Doctrine, and the killing of fishermen in the Caribbean framed as a 'war on drugs'.
Enjoying the “culture” and the music is not a neutral act. It also means asking questions about human rights and about the conditions migrant people live under in your own countries.
I saw many friends from other countries genuinely excited about Bad Bunny’s show, and I enjoyed it too. However, it feels important to remember that Latin American joy cannot be separated from Latin American struggles.

Because I am angry I will share this again. One of the reasons that Israel is able to target individuals so precisely is that it collects every phone call in Gaza and stores the recordings in Microsoft Azure, then uses AI to analyze and pick targets.
We’re happy to share our new article, just in time for some summer reading: “Towards a common EU-abortion policy? The European Parliament’s resolutions on abortion as a human rights issue” by Lourdes Peroni and Marta Bucholc.

I'm thrilled that @restofworld.org has excerpted one of my favorite passages from EMPIRE OF AI. It's not about Sam Altman or OpenAI directly. It's about what their vision of scale is costing us—and how we could dare to dream for a different conception of progress. 1/
