Nancy is all set for our North West Frontier Mini Railtour on the Cavan and Leitrim Railway this Sunday.
A train in a country station.
Where does the time go? This day three years ago, our volunteers ran our first Cork-based railtour, The Suir Lee Knot, to Waterford via Tipperary, a rare route for the @irishrail.bsky.social 2600 class.
Today, 12th April 2026, marks 50 years since the former Belfast Central Railway line reopened, along with the opening of Belfast Central Station, or what is now known as Belfast Lanyon Place.

Park Royal 1946 (originally 1424) one of the pair we visited at Clonakilty on last week's tour. Only 5 such vehicles survive, these 2 were among the last three in mainline service (the other being 1944, preserved at @downrail.bsky.social)

A big thanks to everybody who supported this venture, and to Kearneys of Cork for the excellent service provided throughout the day. Special thanks to West Cork Model Railway Village for having us and the West Cork Hotel, Skibbereen, for the scrumptious meal provided.
Our final stop was to view the station at Ballineen, which is being restored by BEDA Station House Campaign.

People look at a redbrick building with a sign that says "Baltimore".
Our coach brought us right down to the quays in Baltimore, the furthest south one of our tours has ever gone.

At Skibbereen we took a lunch break, with most of our passengers getting a hearty meal in the West Cork Hotel, which incorporates this original Schull & Skibbereen Railway bridge. Photo: Thomas Meegan.

Our exploration of the former Clonakilty branch line ended at the West Cork Model Railway Village. This is home to a former Irish Sugar Board Ruston diesel and two of the last Park Royal carriages to run in service, Nos.1400 and 1424.
Ballinascarthy is of course the tome town of one Henry Ford, who definitely left his mark on the transport industry in Ireland and just about everywhere.
We then retraced the former Clonakilty branch. Some of group gather as JB gives a brief lecture on the history of the railway in Ballinascarthy.
After Bandon, it was onward to the site of Clonakilty Junction, near Gaggin.
Next stop was Bandon, where the former station building is now in use as a council office.

Our first photostop was to view the impressive Chetwynd Viaduct, which still stands proudly over the road some 65 years after the railway closed.
Leaving #Cork, we passed the site of the once extensive siding system on the city's quays.
We are very grateful to historian Ray Good (left) of the Irish Railway Record Society - Munster Area Branch, who provided us with a detailed account and commentary of the former network.
Our 2026 season (and fifth year of operations) kicked off with The West Cork Wanderer on Saturday, taking in key locations served by the former Cork, Bandon & South Coast Railway system which closed 65 years ago in March 1961.
Táilte Tours Year 5 is officially on the road. First stop: Chetwynd Viaduct.
2026 is the 125th Anniversary of the takeover of the Waterford, Limerick & Western Railway, once Ireland's 4th largest railway company. www.tailtetours.com/post/the-wat... #limerick #waterford #railways #history
Just two days to go until The West Cork Wanderer outing, as a reminder we will now be leaving Cork Kent Station at 10:00 to allow for a connection from the 07:00 Dublin Heuston-Cork rail service. Our stewards will be wearing green Táilte jackets and will guide you to the bus.
Just one week until we set off on our "West Cork Wanderer" bus substitution railtour, commemorating the 65th anniversary of the closure of the former Cork, Bandon & South Coast Railway system.
