Yeah Masto's design kind of incentivizes power-seeking forum lords to set up instances. Atproto only really hits the spot for people who Fucking Love Infrastructure. So it's a slower buildout of more alternatives but the result seems more sustainable

There are bridge tools which crosspost people's Mastodon accounts to Bluesky and vice versa, so they're definitely not totally incompatible but it doesn't feel 100% seamless yet.

It's pretty similar, but Mastodon combines post storage with post viewing, so the user experience of running a Mastodon instance seems to have pushed people into being dysfunctional forum moderators. ActivityPub could probably be used in a similar way that separates the two, but Mastodon doesn't.

This is different from Mastodon cause the place where you store your posts is different from the place everyone reads your posts. This tends to mean people running PDSes give less of a shit about what you put on them as long as it's not illegal, so no more onerous moderation bullshit.

So that's how you can "leave Bluesky" without actually leaving everyone who still uses Bluesky. You can, in theory, escape censorship if Bluesky cracks down on your expression.

In practice, we need more alternative bsky sites for evading that censorship to be practical. But it's happening.

When Bluesky-the-website or Blacksky-the-website ban someone, all it does is that if someone wants to load that person's posts on their website, the posts won't load

But the posts could live on any PDS in the world

And if someone made another website that didn't ban them, they'd be accessible

So Blacksky Dot Community (the website not the PDS) is a clone of Bluesky (the website not the PDS). It ALSO reads everyone's PDSes and lists all the posts from them. BUT they have a completely different ToS from Bluesky.

Some people censored on Bluesky are NOT banned from Blacksky.

Moving your data off Bluesky's PDS (google drive for your posts is too many characters, I'm gonna say PDS from now on, hope you can keep up) only solves the problem of if Bluesky wanted to censor you by deleting your posts off of their own servers. Censoring you on their site is a different problem.

This can get confusing cause just like how Bluesky runs a PDS (Google drive for your posts) so does Blacksky, which is blacksky dot app, AND an AppView (website that reads everyone's Google Drives), which is blacksky dot community. But roll with me. Two things. Post storage, post reading website.

Turns out it's easy to host a Google Drive For Your Posts which is why there's so many options. But a Website That Reads Everyone's Posts And Turns Them Into A Twitter Feed is more complicated.

That's why your choices for now are pretty much Bsky Dot App and Blacksky Dot Community.

That probably sounds cool, if you're worried about getting banned from Bluesky cause you drew horny artwork of a character whose knees go in the wrong direction. But wait! You moved your data and Bluesky is still tagging your nudes as "adult" when you already fucking tagged them as "nude!" Wtf???

This Google Drive For Your Posts is called a "PDS" and Bluesky does run their own, which most of us first signed up for. But anyone can run another. And you can move your shit and continue to post to Bluesky like nothing happened. Cause all Bluesky does is just read all the PDSes in the world.
