I swear for 2 or 3 posts I thought this thread was fully a metaphor I was completely unable to understand about that guy on here earlier who was big mad that he didn't get enough bsky points or whatever.

Video

I saw this video of a Vietnam vet in the fur coat yelling at ICE and thought to myself, "this is missing something," before I realized, "Ah, of course, the Ether instrumental. It's so obvious."

OK, right here you're found the problem and please sit with this:

emotions are running very high. emotional intelligence is needed in this moment in addition to logic.

democrats are failing the emotional intelligence test right now and people are mad about it.

Seeing a concerning number of people thinking that having the Minnesota cops investigate the murder is somehow different than having the feds investigate it, as if they aren't on the same team.

Oh that's really interesting. I used to set up 9x9 parks and demolish the middle square if it was a non-fountain b/c I thought fountains in the middle of a park were prettier and would make my sims happier. :-)

I think those are the park tiles. Every so often it would randomly place a fountain tile instead of the usual park tile, but it was only a cosmetic difference. I think. It's been...over 30 years since I played.

You should bring this up on discord.

Even if you *could* "fix" the nazi platform — WHY WOULD YOU BUILD ECONOMIC VALUE FOR A WHITE SUPREMACIST. I swear people are goddamn fools. "Tell your progressive friends to go buy a Tesla so that other Tesla drivers might like us better?" Money is power. Don't give Musk power. Read a goddamn book.

Whenever I see something like this I imagine one person noticing and desperately trying to get people to fix it but being told that "whatever, it doesn't matter". And then then seeing posts like this one and thinking "I TOLD THEM SOMEONE WOULD NOTICE"

Have you ascended?

Jay, you all owe an explanation of how it came to be that the exact list of users blamed by The Federalist were banned even if they did not break the ToS, and were not unsuspended until more than a day later.

Just saw someone refer to Cheryl Hines as The Marvelous Mrs. Measles and 💀💀💀💀💀💀

I listened to some early episodes of his podcast and I remember it having this tone of "why aren't we friends" and "are you mad at me" and it was all kind of weirdly...neurotic, I guess? I could never figure out if it serious or a bit, but it made me kind of uncomfortable.

There is a consistent pattern where people who are quite negative on the technology on many fronts find that adopting any position that is not uniformly negative provokes hostility that seems somewhat unwarranted, and I think this is not good.

...exploring.

Anyway. I realize I am posting this on social media. It just sucks that we can't have discussions where we assume everyone is arguing in good faith.

...to the way social media is used. But it fucking sucks that the possibility of nuanced discussion has been completely obliterated.

I do not like the way LLMs are being used right now. But I also think training an LLM on eg *only* what I have written, either code or prose, is worth...

It sucks that social media has ruined the possibility of honest discourse. Any discussions of eg LLMs immediately turns in to "I am right. You are an AI dudebro. Be gone." rather than trying to engage in a conversation. And I understand why it is this way, it is a totally understandable reaction...

It felt like it was a bit faster than I remembered it being, though I haven't listened to that album in decades at this point. I thought it had something to do with the digitization process, so reading this is extremely cool.

This should be obvious, but I’m going to say it anyway because the internet has a way of making obvious things less obvious:

You cannot substantively care about every worthy cause out there.

If your response is “Maybe YOU can’t, but I can!” you are confusing feeling with actually caring.

Some people want comedians to run for office b/c they are unapologetic about being leftists (/left-ish). Everything is awful and at least they are not afraid to say it.

People are desperate for a party that is not full of mealy mouthed losers that trip all over themselves running to the right.

Damn, if only there was some phrase in the original post about having clean hands. Oh well!

I liked it, but I will say the last season was...uneven.

Not sure how you'd put that on a sticker though.

One night in the late 90s a CRT that was plugged in to a (publicly accessible) server in my bedroom suddenly woke up with a thunk. Lost sleep b/c of adrenaline & also b/c I was trying to figure out why that would happen, or was it more likely that the server got popped and someone was fucking w/ me.

Assistant: Sir, Mamdani just got a huge new endorsement.

Cuomo: Destroy whomever it is.

Assistant: I don’t think we can fuck with them.

Cuomo: I don’t care who they are, I will fuck with whomever I want.

Assistant: But sir…

I understand the logic behind not platforming Nazis, fascists, transphobes, etc.

But I have to say. I don't think it's working.

One of my coworkers refers to Open Source as “the most incredible thing humanity has ever accomplished.” When he says that, he’s not making a socioeconomic or political statement, nor is he ignoring technical shortcomings. Rather, he is making an observation about how millions of people have […]
