Doris Kearns Goodwin referred to Lincoln as a “consummate pragmatist.” As a child of parents and grandparents with one HS diploma between them, who somehow managed to get into an Ivy, I have always felt this defined my peers more than anything else. They knew and had the drive (or luck) to succeed.
