Once upon a time newspaper publishers were wealthy enough to withstand legal potshots from the public. Now that they're hanging by threads and the super-wealthy can squash them like bugs, their more precarious position makes them more likely to prioritize self-preservation over truth.

Jonas Salk on his first Polio vaccine "Our greatest responsibility is to be good ancestors". This quote is a reminder of our duty to future generations.
And, to remember that his science was made free to the world.

Beware, fellow plutocrats, the pitchforks are coming | Nick Hanauer YouTube video by TED

Throwback to 2014 when Nick Hanauer sounded the alarm. IIRC, the message was heard, but not the solution, as the super wealthy decided it meant they should build survival bunkers instead of raise wages. Even now, wage gains made during the pandemic are being clawed back. youtu.be/q2gO4DKVpa8

He seems to think that’s what he needs to say for his constituents or maybe even to seem high-minded, but the line about no one being above the law is incredibly naive at this moment in time.

It FEELS like there will be less overall waiting if you make the first bus instead of the second or third, but the reality is that you’ll just start waiting sooner at baggage claim or your next gate. For tight connections though, the need to be on the first bus makes people feral.

who, to my mind, are cloud app entrepreneurs. Maybe there are some finer points about the gestalt of the making of the app + turning it into a business and all that entails, but ‘cloud app entrepreneur’ better fits the case in my mind. Whence this nomenclature?

I clearly haven’t been paying attention… In my Luddite brain, a ‘maker’ was someone like Limor Fried or Simone Giertz (of shitty robots fame) - a hardware makers who made tangible things. Sometimes there was software on board, but not always. And now I see starter packs for Indie makers

Has anybody tried putting cool little prizes inside boxes of *healthy* food? Like I’m not saying I definitely for sure would eat quinoa five days in a row just to get a free decoder ring…but I’m not saying I definitely for sure wouldn’t either.

I love Claris Works! I was a Claris sales engineer back in the early 90s and one of my duties was to be able to put Claris Works through its paces at trade shows.

1/ 🚨 Conspiracy theories about the 2024 election miss the bigger picture.

The truth? It wasn’t one night, one hack, or one fraud. It was a system rigged in plain sight – right in front of us. The playbook was out in the open for years. But hardly anyone paid attention.

Here’s how they did it... 🧵

It's Sunday morning so taking a minute for a nerdy thread (on math, tokenizers and LLMs) of the work of our intern Garreth

By adding a few lines of code to the base Llama 3 tokenizer, he got a free boost in arithmetic performance 😮
