if you have Photoshop, can you try pasting the illustrator document into a Photoshop one of the same size as a smart object?

interesting...any time I get to the complexity of that kind of illustration, I always want to do it in Photoshop anyway—Photoshop has vector art tools, can do gradient fill layers that are then clipped, and gives a bit more flexibility.
