FC Megami Tensei 1 & 2 arguably have more unhinged dungeon designs than even the older Wizardry titles. Megami Tensei 1 especially.
But that's also why I love those games so much, actually. They were very ambitious for their era. They're still worth playing if you want to get into DRPGs.

The Nian-Xi Chronicles: Prelude has been out for nearly two months now to surprising success! Though I began another project, I'm coming back to Prelude for an extra update.

Special mention goes to the soundtrack. It's the only Famicom game to ever use the VRC7 chip, allowing it to produce FM Synth audio (Akin to the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive).
This, Mouryou Senki Madara and Akumajou Densetsu are probably my top 3 Konami soundtracks on Famicom.

This is therefore my cue to come back to my NES FF1 playthrough.
I haven't touched it in years though, so I might restart.
As someone who ironically has no clue about Final Fantasy, I feel like binging it like how I did with Wizardry last year.
The only things I do know is that its game design can get very unhinged sometimes (wdym you get an ultimate sword in FF9 by speedrunning the game in 12 hours)

Currently making up new formulas. It's actually kind of fun imagining the possibilities.
At least until I get to playtesting and realize the whole formula has horrible scaling and I have to redo it from scratch.
Why can't I just be happy with "a.atk * 4 - b.def * 2"
I haven't tested the second one beyond my current project. But depending on how things go, I might actually release it as a standalone plugin for anyone to use in the future. I'm not the only one who wanted this sort of thing in their game.
And hey, MZ in general needs more free plugins...
One just changes the way Ambushes/Preemptive attacks are handled, making it so the chances are influenced by the player's AGI stat too.
The other is a bit more ambitious, as it allows for "Pre-Battle" themes to play before anybody performs any action. Similar to MegaTen's negotiation themes.
I haven't mentioned it, but I've actually been delving into plugin making for a while.
Originally, it was to manually alter the Battle UI. But I got the hang of it rather quickly and even made two small plugins for my next game. It's a lot easier to understand even if you don't know much about JS.
