www.theguardian.com/australia-ne... Is.this.normal? One cyclone travelled round about half of the entire continent hitting 3 huge state's coastlines from Arnem Land to Perth! And Woodside! Lol! #extremeweather #australia #cyclonenarelle #hurricanes #climateemergency #climatecrisis
This shock to our food system is not the first, and won’t be the last. A focus on band-aid solutions that prop up the current system undermines long-term resilience.
"You can’t choke off wind or block the sun." ABC explains how renewables are not just a climate solution, but an off-ramp to fuel price shocks. "Once the equipment is shipped to Australia and installed, it can last decades without needing a steady stream of fuels burnt to create electricity."
The Albanese Government has just approved a new gas export project, directly exposing Australians to more climate damage, price hikes and rising costs of living.
The project is approved until 2081 – more than THREE DECADES after Australia plans to finish its switch to clean energy.
Governments sit and watch while oligarchs purchase our politics, as if it were just another asset to be monopolised. For the sake of democracy and our own survival, we need to get the money out. Our political systems must belong to us and us alone.

If the Albanese Government had introduced a 25% gas export tax when it was first elected, it would have raised more than $63 billion!
Free childcare or free uni shouldn't be a pipe dream.
If big gas paid its fair share, Australians would be better off.

'It can be hard for many Australians to fully grasp how drastically our weather patterns are changing....when extremes now strike, they strike from a hotter, more dangerous starting point.' #climateemergency #climatecrisis #Australia #climatecouncil #climatewhiplash
The Australia Institute has proposed a Climate Disaster Levy on fossil fuel exports to ensure the companies exporting fossil fuels from Australia pay for some of the damage they are causing, rather than leaving Australians to foot the bill.

You’re meant to tax things you want less of & subsidise things you want more of.
Yet Australian governments are handing out $16.3 billion in subsidies for fossil fuels.
@mattgrudnoff.bsky.social & @elinorjohnstonleek.bsky.social discuss why on this episode of Dollars & Sense.

"The Voice of Hind Rajab," nominated for best international film at this year's Oscars, uses the real audio of 6-year-old Hind Rajab as she begged rescuers for help following an attack by Israeli soldiers in Gaza.
"When you hear her voice, you can't unhear it," says director Kaouther Ben Hania.

Science as ideology:
Keep calm and look on the bright side.
"The flip side is that we should perhaps feel fortunate that all of Antarctica isn't reacting right now, because we would be in far more trouble," Rignot said. "But that could be the next step.”

The precedent is eerily, chillingly precise. What the current Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is doing to immigrants and refugees today is almost a carbon copy of what Sir William Joynson-Hicks was doing 100 years ago. And that's not a good thing. My column.

We relocated to Western Australia for a school term in Jan and thought we’d make ourselves useful by covering some local shitfuckery with help from local talent, so we’re stoked to have folksinger, writer, educator and all-round WA legend Lucy Peach guest-hosting our latest episode! ✨
It took 68 years to reach the first terawatt of solar power - then just two years to hit the second.
To put that into context, 2TW is equal to the whole power capacity of India, the US, and the UK combined, and enough to power 1 billion households worldwide!
Let’s hear it for solar power!
Labor has so many reasons to get Australia out of AUKUS.
Canada sees it’s a dud deal and doesn’t want to join any more.
There’s another illegal Trump & Netanyahu war in the Middle East that Australia should not be supporting.
