THREAD: The IEA global energy review 2026
* CO2 record high, but growth nearly ground to halt
* Clean energy shaved 3bn tonnes off CO2
* Fossil-fuel power pushed into reverse
* Age of Electricity "confirmed"
* "Extraordinary" solar growth
* Batteries up 40%
* EVs up 20%

Chart of relative energy costs since 2010 shows a steady decline in wind and solar vs wild oscillations in the price of oil due to geopolitical events like the current war in Iran.
An economist friend passes along this graph of energy costs. He says, "Given this history, it is more than a little ironic that renewable energy is derided by fossil-fuel proponents as 'unreliable.'”
The world added 814 GW of wind and solar in 2025, increasing the total installation of the sum of both by 24%, from 3,360 GW to 4,174 GW, in just one year.
New wind in '25: 167 GW (new total ~1,300 GW)
New solar in '25: 647 GW (new total ~2,900 GW)

Never seen anything like this. 200+ monthly records set today alone! Every pink dot means a city set its new all-time highest March temperature! That’s around 570 new monthly records in the last 4 days. Some set multiple times. By far the most rogue #heatwave the US has experienced in memory.
Rapid EV growth in developing nations surprises!
"In 2025, China reached over 50% of EV sales for the first time, while that share was 38% in Vietnam and 21% in Thailand."
Asian EV Boom!

This should be the biggest weather and climate news on your radar today.
You can send an email today to say why dismantling NCAR is a bad idea for everyone: NSF_NCAR@nsf.gov
⚠️ Real energy security is renewables – no price spikes for sunlight, no embargoes on wind. ☀️🌬️
We must stop excuses, end new coal, oil & gas, accelerate renewables, and fund a just transition⚡
#SantaMarta must be the turning point.

As I say here, there is no scientific justification to revoke the engagement finding. In fact, over the last 15+ yrs, the evidence of how climate change affects our health has only grown. Higher risk of allergies, dementia, fertility, heart disease, and death: that’s what’s on the line. @nature.org
In what is arguably the World's Best News, it looks like India is going to spend much less time in the "fossil fuel detour" than the US or China. It is moving much more directly to clean electrification.

Record heat is the new normal, says WWF's @stephanieroe.bsky.social, as 2025 ranks among the three hottest years ever. The good news? Climate solutions are breaking records too. Rapid emissions cuts are possible. More here: t.co/Ph4h3mU6i8
Adaptation is going to be a key area of negotiation at #COP30 in Belem next week, including landing on 100 indicators to track progress on adapting to climate change under the GGA
Ahead of COP kicking off, I took a look at the GGA and how experts whittled down the list of 10k indicators to just 100

160 scientists, 23 countries, 1 report: The Global Tipping Points Report 2025, together with @exeter.ac.uk, highlights mounting risks across Earth’s systems, from melting glaciers & ice fields to slowing ocean currents, ice sheets & rainforests under pressure. Watch now👇

A two-part infographic showing relationships between five nexus elements: biodiversity, water, food, health, and climate. Part A shows projected future impacts across six different nexus archetypes, ranging from "Nature-oriented nexus" to "Nature overexploitation." Impacts are indicated using blue upward arrows (positive), red downward arrows (negative), and wavy lines (variable). Part B displays six network diagrams showing interactions among the nexus elements. Each diagram represents a different archetype, using circles with icons for each element. Arrows between elements show relationships: Blue arrows indicate positive influences Red arrows indicate negative influences Different arrow thicknesses show magnitude (high, moderate, low) The diagrams progressively show how relationships between elements change from balanced and positive interactions in the "Nature-oriented nexus" to predominantly negative interactions in the "Nature overexploitation" scenario. The visualization demonstrates how different management approaches affect the relationships between environmental, health, and climate factors.
🔍#Biodiversity. Water. Food. Health. #ClimateChange. All of them interact and intersect but how?
Check this new graphic from the @ipbes.net #Nexus Assessment and explore the interactions among the nexus elements.

I get that the news cycle is packed right now, but I just heard from a colleague at the Smithsonian that this is fully a GIANT SQUID BEING EATEN BY A SPERM WHALE and it’s possibly the first ever confirmed video according to a friend at NOAA

So spot on. And unfortunately similar to many of the DOE report responses
Our 400+ page comment on the DOE climate working group report is now out.
Our conclusion: The merchants of doubt are back, and they're coming for climate science.
I'd love to hear from colleagues on:
👉 What should we carry forward from other ARs?
👉 What emerging ideas/data/research should we include in AR7; and what gaps should be addressed?
👉 How can this chapter better reflect and support implementation in policy, private sector, and practice?
Land systems are at the heart of the climate–biodiversity–people nexus. Among other topics, this chapter will explore how terrestrial ecosystems and agriculture can contribute to decarbonization while enhancing resilience and durable and equitable outcomes for biodiversity and people.
I'm delighted to serve as a Lead Author for the IPCC’s Seventh Assessment Report (AR7) in the Land Sector (AFOLU) Chapter under Working Group III. I'm looking forward to engaging with the wider community on this important multi-year scientific effort.

The USGS Ecosystems Mission Area - the backbone of environmental & ecological monitoring in the US - is set to be eliminated through the federal budget. Losing this would be a generational setback for nature & wildlife mgmt. Join NWF's rally to lean more. www.mobilize.us/nwf/event/79...
My ongoing request:
If your NSF or NIH grant was terminated--whether at Harvard or elsewhere--please report it here.
NSF: grant-watch.us/submit-nsf.h...
NIH: grant-watch.us/submit-nih.h...
Our trackers are actively used in lawsuits and are often the only record that terminations ever occurred.
Yup. This was literally me. Funded by Nautilus Minerals to do baseline environmental impact assessment for a hydrothermal vent mine. Went in cautiously optimistic. Came out concluding there's no feasible path forward for mining a hydrothermal vent at any scale.
