Yes, absolutely. My point was that even under the best-case conditions in Casey, public transport still does not offer a strong enough comparative advantage over the car. In many areas, the reality is considerably worse in terms of service frequency, which only underlines the scale of the problem.
There are a few routes at 20 min frequencies at certain periods in the day, but yes my point is that that isn't even good enough.
Glad to contribute to this piece on the impact of the fuel crisis car use and free public transport as demand management measure
In that sense, the fuel crisis does not create the problem; it reveals long-standing gaps in public transport planning and the social and financial risks of forced car ownership
...that is not a genuinely competitive alternative to the car, especially when a missed connection can add substantial delay to the total journey
Fuel prices soar, but Casey commuters still stuck in cars

I would very much agree with you re. higher frequency and better service planning, but there's an election looming...

Our new paper examines rural and car-dependent regions & the limited access to public or shared electric vehicle charging infrastructure Drawing on agent-based and stochastic simulation, we propose a peer-to-peer charger-sharing that prioritises equity of access

Transport, of course, is as much of behaviour change problem as a technology improvement problem à la the 'Avoid - Shift - Improve' framework share.google/tPy5Np1kBAY3...
Aside from transport electrification and the'$100 million Active Transport Fund, High-Speed and Inland Rail' the 'Net Zero Plan' (www.dcceew.gov.au/climate-chan...)
does not mention much about increased investment in public transport services as a carbon abatement strategy...
“Transition of the passenger vehicle fleet from [internal combustion engine] vehicles to EVs accounts for most of this change,” the government says.

All of this calls for integrated rural mobility and energy strategies, better #schooltransport, sustainable rural transport investment, and targeted support for low-income households, to break these cycles of disadvantage.
- Half of rural areas lack public transport, leaving many children “trapped” locally.
- Cumulative energy and transport poverty compounds disadvantage, independent of household income.
- Girls living in rural areas showed the highest mental-health vulnerability.
In our newly published paper it was particularly interesting from a transport planning perspective, that children in #rural areas, especially girls and low-income households, face unique educational and mental-health risks from poor transport access.

Expanding rail is vital, but the quickest and most cost-effective way to tackle transport gaps in Melbourne’s low-density growth areas is a frequent bus network: reliable, every 10–15 mins, and easy to access. Ready years before new rail arrives.
