I'd rather hear from the 20%. If they think they work, end of story.

That this guy still has a platform at all is the moral failure here.

Yup. This is literally Pirates vs. Global Warming but with staffing versus homicides (homicides?!?).

This is very much @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social territory.

Exactly, 10% set aside but not necessarily "protected" (from what is also left up to the reader)

Would you like a little rest?

I made this little video for you. It’s just trees. A small creek. Nothing happens. It’s 2 minutes long.

I’m at the mid-career slump.
I’m at the national research funding & infrastructure crisis.
I’m at the university budget cuts.
I’m at the nonsensical war.
I’m at the demolition of our democracy.
I’m at the combination mid-career-slump-national-research-funding-&-infrastructure-crisis-university-budge

You can't... repeal... a scientific finding. At that point it's just called lying about it.

This is one of my favorite ways to visualize #SeaLevelRise...

With another year of verified water levels at Key West behind us now (as of today), here's the updated version of this chart I've been making for the past decade or so. 🧪🌊

In this US case-control study, from 2015-2020, of about 16,000 kids with acute respiratory illness presenting for care, receiving at least 1 dose of flu vaccine was associated with a >50% reduction in flu-associated pediatric ED visits or hospitalizations 💪💉💪

I do understand: you want permission. There’s a machine in the corner wrapped in human skin that makes things out of shit and blood to look like whatever you want (as long as you don’t look too closely). You gave one to your teacher and they didn’t notice. Your boss told you to use it after they laid off half the team and it was fine. You fed one to your kids and they liked it. You want to know you can use it sometimes without me thinking less of you. You don’t need me to believe it’s useful, you just want me to be polite about it.

Another example of the most basic fisheries management success. Reduce F, in this case to essentially zero, and SSB will increase. Sometimes it takes longer than we'd like, but lots of good ecology research happens in the meantime.

In a study following 23 million people age 18-59 (pretty young) for 4 years…despite the fact that the ones who got the COVID vaccine were overall older and sicker at baseline, they not only had 74% lower risk of dying from COVID than the unvaccinated but 25% lower risk of dying from any other cause!

one unexpected outlook change from being a dad is taking the self care people 10x more seriously when it comes to dealing with weirdly directed anger and rage (including Online). many angry posts should have been naps or little packets of crackers

2025 will end up as the warmest year by a substantial 0.8°F margin in #Albuquerque.
The last time the record high was broken by a larger margin was 1950. Important difference: in 1950 there were 57 years in the historical record to compete against... in 2025 there were 132 years to compete against.

Much to my children's dismay, turns out I'm pretty good at catching little fish (they just want BIG ones)! Like this Tobaccofish, Serranus tabacarius, a beautiful small Serranid, or basslet. Caught 12/30 in the Florida Keys on a sabiki rig.

This was the same justification used to authorize the Juvenile Goliath Grouper harvest, too. That one just never made it to court where they had to admit it publicly.

#Florida's first bear hunt in 10 years starts today (despite science saying no hunt should take place). These people won permits to hunt -- but say they won't use them. www.tallahassee.com/story/news/l...

Exclusive: Woman detained by feds in Keys says she was following agents’ orders “This is not the America that I grew up in, and this is not the America that we represent.”

“Traumatized, humiliated, degraded.”

The nurse, a US citizen, 4’11”, 85 lbs, says she was following orders when she was dragged out of her car by masked immigration agents in Florida.

It was the 3rd time she had been stopped and told to produce ID.

My column this week points out that this #Florida bear hunt flies in the face of science, but the FWC says it doesn't have to follow science. floridaphoenix.com/2025/12/04/f...

A Florida bear hunt is a sad and pathetic thing. It's a blight on the wildlife commission that approved it and lied about bear populations in the state, which are on the decline due to massive and unwise clearcutting for development. DeSantis and the Repubs in charge are sacks of shit.
