this is a really an unfathomable level of evil

“shut off all foreign aid” is of course just as evil but it’s a blunt instrument, where you don’t have to directly face the specific programs you’re killing

but these little fucks were manually vetoing PEPFAR time and again

if I were writing stories about the gov "firing thousands of probationary workers" I would probably rewrite as "firing thousands of new hires -- who are often on a status called "probation" --" because I think the general understanding of "probation" is "in trouble for something they did"

this form of resistance from our children, is terrifying.

sorry, just thinking about the reading scores of children in the US tonight.

reading is incredibly important. it’s something that nobody can take away from you. the memorization of poetry and literary works has kept people sane, it has been a light in dark days for many many years, and to take away

america’s education system has always been an easy way to churn out great little workers. institutionalization works! just tell the children how to think since they’re born and it’s an easy jump to them doing whateverrrrr you want in the name of capitalism

why teach your children (future workers) to read when all you need them to do is follow orders? it’s much better to have an uneducated populace when your goal is control of the masses with the intent to make money off of their labor.

Record January heat suggests La Niña may be losing its ability to keep global warming in check Human-driven ocean warming is increasingly overwhelming El Niño, La Niña, and other natural climate patterns.

Your 'bonus moment of doom' for today.

"If many climate-watchers expected the world to cool slightly this year thanks to the natural “La Niña” phenomena, the climate itself didn’t seem to get the memo."

"Worth reiterating that H5N1 has never behaved like this."
Also true for the brain.

The pronounced neurotropism of the current #H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b is highlighted by high viral loads in the brain and minimal or no viral presence in the lungs. There was a shift in virus behavior. shorturl.at/wVyRT

A show of support to the scientists and staff at NOAA. This is among the best collection of scientists in the world who provide an invaluable public service via data and forecasting. Their work proves essential for daily operations of the military to commerce to the rest of the private sector.

A red squirrel encounters a surprised northern saw whet owl at the entrance of its nest cavity.

I’ll be digging up old photos to share with new viewers as well as posting new favourites.

This is an all time favourite of mine while waiting for this owl to naturally emerge from its cavity, this red squirrel appeared. Neither animal was harmed and the squirrel quickly moved on. #wildlife

Antiabortion advocates look for men to report their partners’ abortions Male partners can have uniquely personal and specific information that help surface new lawsuits in states with abortion bans.

A Texas anti-abortion group is launching "an advertising campaign on Facebook and X to reach the husbands, boyfriends and sex partners of women who have had abortions in the state — with the goal of recruiting them to file lawsuits against those who assisted the women in ending their pregnancies."

Maine and a Kansas county take Big Oil to court State and local governments continue to turn to the courts for accountability as Big Oil’s federal takeover looms.

ICYMI, the state of Maine and a small Kansas county separately sued oil and petrochemical giants and trade associations for deception last week.

Seems like Trump's election hasn't deterred local govts from seeking accountability from Big Oil, at least in court www.exxonknews.org/p/maine-and-...

I will keep advocating "cash cash cash" because one major thing that demoralizes me is how I don't have disposable income to give to GoFundMes, and to a much lesser extent, Kickstarters and charities.
With cash I can choose to send someone $5 instead of splurging on a takeout.

Patient dies in Nanaimo hospital bathroom after overdose prevention site closes, says doctor ‘This is an example of why services like this are needed,’ doctor says

Opposing overdose prevention centers/supervised consumption sites does not eliminate or even reduce drug use. It just eliminates or reduces safety.

The alternative to safe use is not less drug use, it’s just unsafe drug use.

Unsafe consumption sites exist all around you whether you know it or not.

B.C. First Nations leaders demand action after Cree girl restrained, pushed to the ground by security guards The violent detention of a 16-year-old Cree girl highlights the ongoing racial profiling of Indigenous people, say leaders.

“This ongoing cycle of violence and abuse is fuelled by racist beliefs and ideas which portray Indigenous peoples as stereotypes that are removed from any semblance of reality,” said Regional Chief Terry Teegee of the B.C. Assembly of First Nations."

I don’t fault a young actor for getting work, but in terms of the producers and director, it’ll never sit right with me that we went from Black and Latino leads, one of whom who was cruelly fired and gaslit, back to white leads that need a ludicrous time jump to make sense in the timeline.
