Cars and vans bobbing in flood water in an Edwardian suburban street.

"Climate change will manifest as a series of disasters viewed through phones with footage that gets closer and closer to where you live until you're the one filming it"

Or till the background is the street you grew up in. Hits home.

HS Transhipment mechanism in the WCPFC compared with other tRFMOs — Francisco Blaha There is a quiet pride in reading a report that lists your name in the acknowledgements. You recognise the arguments, the framing, even some of the technical suggestions. Yet when you read the final p...

The gaps identified in this excellent ISSF report are not primarily technical. They are not the result of insufficient knowledge or a lack of available tools. They persist because of the way decisions are made, priorities are set, and trade-offs are accepted.

My initial reaction was similar… “end of times” type stuff. But agree that each “energy revolution” required more use of the prior one for a while. Coal still be used but in different ways than 100 or 50 years ago so things do change… not sure if fast enough tho

We do have problems too mate. Perhaps they don’t make the news often and some of our issues are quite tame in comparison… but there are some real fuckwits in position of power… we facing presently big emigration. youtu.be/dLK2zwmHr2E?...

Not sure if the comparison has any transcendental meaning, but it's just sobering to me.

The UK pet industry sector is valued at approximately £8 billion in 2025 down from £9.5 in 2024.
In comparison the WCPO tuna fishery, which accounts for nearly 60% of global tuna production, and sustain all of Pacific Islands economies is estimated at around $4.1–$4.5 billion annually.

The Very Argentinian Ritual of Mate - Google Arts & Culture A plant inherited from the indigenous populations has become a friendship ritual

Very interesting research… I love to test the truth “Argentiniannes” of those ants against the alkaloids found in Mate 🧉 ☺️

After 30 years on the implementation of projects developed by others… I never sure if things ever work as planned… and seem to be an intrinsic feature of project strategy first and implementation later. I’m a Pareto type guy… 80% success seems to be a natural limit

Iran says Hormuz Strait open after Lebanon deal, Trump expects Iran deal 'soon' Major shipping companies were cautious, signalling it may take time for traffic through the chokepoint to return to normal levels.

For Iran to put the end of Israel’s invasion of Lebanon as a condition to open Hormuz is a master diplomatic move. It creates a wedge in between Israel and USA while rendering the counter blockade self defeating by letting them to justify stoping China’s and its allies

Northland driver John Le Noel sentenced for death of cyclist Matthew Howard at Ōkaihau John Le Noel's car was travelling up to 117km/h in a 50km/h zone on Ōkaihau's main street.

Absolute tragedy. But less than 3 years jail for killing a cyclist while driving at 117km/hr in 50 km area, on a restricted after 10 pm, on a car without a WoF for over 3 years and not stopping to help?
It just does not feel right. You get 3 years for animal cruelty

The Comfort of Voluntary Initiatives — Francisco Blaha I always get a reassuring feeling about initiatives like the Ethical Tuna Collaboration (ETC). They signal intent and create a sense of responsibility.

A flag state that allows a vessel to reduce costs by underpaying crew, charging recruitment fees, etc, still competes - more effectively- with one that complies with all labour standards. Voluntary compliance can be a disadvantage unless universally enforced.

So many years later... still so much accumulated hate... I imagine they must be quite lonely and sad for actions like this to bring any joy to their lives.

So "gracias" to the organisers of this event for the invitation to speak about "the identification of fishing manoeuvres using maritime surveillance tools and environmental analysis"

Tiny Marshall Island already implemented working til 3 pm, no aircon, in public offices and commitment to car pooling, based on fuel prices increases and not on availability (has access to US oil reserves). Their goverment is showing more leadership and preparedness than us!

Ports as an economic anchor that ties DWFN to concrete places — Francisco Blaha I read with interest a recent Ocena report , Behind the Fleet: Mapping the Global Network of Service Providers Keeping Distant-Water Fishing Afloat , based on the interesting take they had… For year...

Ports are not just a governance opportunity; they are an economic anchor that ties DWFN to concrete places with their own priorities, constraints, and ambitions. Ports are the places where DWFN become visible, tangible, regulated and economically meaningful.

Organic means matter in its various forms that contain carbon atoms I.e. I learned organic chemistry at uni, and it wasn’t based on the fact that it wasn’t processed or did not had pesticides.

For DOC staff to go around complaining and basically, almost like creating stories to make opposition look bad… doing the wrong thing or being, you know, taking illegal or nasty tactics is really low life on their part. We're not going to buy into it," she said.
