Don’t take our word for it, take it from Lt John Grimball, 14th Tank Battalion.

But the fascinating thing about this week's News of the War, is the change in attitudes on the home front. Listen to the Letters of the Week. It's a lesson in how fast things change, and how people are catching up!

Map of the Week in News of the War.
So big, it doesn't fit on social media.
The ops related to the capture of Fort Dufferin and Mandalay were covered extensively by British Army cameramen and photographers - and the reports in this week's News of the War reflect the close-up detail.
UP THE SAPPERS! @andyaitch.bsky.social @merrynwalters.uk
It's always a challenge, looking at things on a podcast. But this week's Cartoon of the Day though, was worth it.
Photo of the Week - 12th March 1945 - and a peculiar reminder that it wasn't just people, pondering, wondering, and wandering around Germany.
@andyaitch.bsky.social @merrynwalters.uk
Bridge-alert. This one, looking ready for it's close-up. First-hand reports in the newspapers now, on American forces unexpectedly seizing the Ludendorff Bridge over the Rhine in March 1945, despite German efforts to destroy it.
There's more news crammed on one page this week, than there's been in seventeen editions of the same daily for donkey's ages. Here, there, everywhere. Indochina, even. And what a war that's been.

🚨 In this week's News of the War, what a change in what the newspapers are saying. It's 12th March 1945, and you'd think it's all over ... there's even a bridge.

The more No. 75 the “Hawkins” grenade, the less I like it. So many accidents in the war. This case is different, the Sgt instructor was fucking about with a live mine in a lecture… the cardinal rule in the RE was TREAT DUMMY AS LIVE

Thanks to @vickersmg.bsky.social 🫡
For Andy’s depressing last story this week we have a gut wrenching accident with a land mine (again)
24 recovering wounded soldiers are killed during a mine lecture…. Remember: TREAT DUMMY AS LIVE
Join us, won’t you for this weeks News Of The War

There’s lots more news: Bedford bus fiascos, Himmler Volssturm nerves, and news from the battle for Budapest. @AndyAitcheson and @rentaquill will update you on the lot linktr.ee/NewsOfTheWar
Our photo of the week is all about the diversity of the sprawling conflict, Sikh sappers, sailor girls, German generals and prefab housing… it’s got it all!

Who’s ever heard of Herbert Lumsden? Well you have now, veteran of Dunkirk and the Western Desert, General Lumsden DSO MC was killed by a kamikaze attack in the pacific.
For our cartoon of the week, the same story is in picture form…. Put a sock in it.
Of all the things the Nazis should feel bad about in the war, being accused of pretending to be the BBC is perhaps not on the list. But they’re in a flap about Arnhem Mary and dodgy radio broadcast about the Bulge.
We have a smorgasbord of maps for you, all from the same front page of the Daily Dispatch…. Not a lot of space to show Norway, The Bulge and The Philippines…. Poor old @merrynwalters.uk is having a fit
New year, new season, new episode!
Join us for news of the war for the biggie.. 1945.
Off to a flying start with the headlines from the 12th January 1945, the tide has turned on the Bulge as the allies push on.

Thanks, Simon
I’ve just listened to this, and it was brilliant. Extremely interesting and @badsocialism.bsky.social is an absolute fount of knowledge and sources. A great listen which has sent me off on further reading
Let me repeat myself. Another top notch pod from @newsofthewar.bsky.social. Really makes you think, maybe reassess long held views.
We also talked with John @badsocialism.bsky.social about African American troops in Britain. The insane mental gymnastics the US army has to go through to continue segregation and Jim Crow laws in a country where officially there’s no segregation laws.

NoTWP often makes me chuckle, gasp at stories of great courage, or brings a tear to my eyes. This pod, enormously thought provoking. I was vaguely aware of some of the history but certainly not the details. As @merrynwalters.uk and @andyaitch.bsky.social say its a story we like to tell ourselves. 1
This was an absolute pleasure to record: thanks to @andyaitch.bsky.social and @merrynwalters.uk for having me on!
Absolutely brilliant guest editor special this week!!
We were so lucky to have John Concah @badsocialism.bsky.social come on and take us through how the newspapers talked about the Atlantic charter, Caribbean and West Indian experience in wartime Britain and much much more.

Heck of an episode. "How long is this vicious discrimination to continue?" John Concagh @badsocialism.bsky.social gets us turning the pages this week, in #Newsofthewar.
... and as we did so, we found ways in which people's stories were shared according to the time. Including George Roberts, who led thousands of ex-servicemen, including those with battle-wounded who were unable to walk, in a march demanding improved rights and higher pensions
In #NewsoftheWar, we dip and dive into a pretty wide range of newspapers ... this week's episode spread a little further. @andyaitch.bsky.social @merrynwalters.uk
