Enshitification is getting out of control. Juli cut the final “in credit” joke of a show to shove the next episode (or to put a big still of a show I am not even watching).

They keep hiking prices for an even shittier experience. This has to stop at some point. I already cut a few services. 👎

What are good and reliable open source email applications for macOS as alternatives to outlook? Ideally with calendar incorporated but ok if just email.

I am migrating to open source due to privacy and bullshit issues. Already working with LibreOffice and LibreWolf.

One can only hope. Not bc government is using it, but perhaps it will fund groups to develop more user friendly Linux or open source stuff and higher outreach for the everyday user (some people just use MS bc is the only thing they think it will be compatible or just bc works gives them license)

I was thinking along the same line about Germany ditching Microsoft and working on an open source platform and France ditching Microsoft to embrace Linux.

This could mean an improvement in open source office software with potential wider adoption. Good outcome coming from all the bad stuff around.

Celebrating when good things happen to good people (feels like a rare event lately) by making a cat.

If I am going to pay $3000 to give scientific journals my research results for publication, it would be great if the submission process is not a nightmare where I have to jump through hoops that were set on fire. The process is already long. No need to add unreasonable constraints. 😠

If your laptop is stranded on Windows 10, the solution isn't a new laptop. It's a new operating system.

I am old enough to remember that what we call "subscription model" now used to be called "ransomware" before. What we call "updates" now used to be called "spyware" back then. That's why you no longer hear about the need to buy anti-spyware software anymore.

Frontiers | First genome sequence and functional profiling of Psychrobacter SC65A.3 preserved in 5,000-year-old cave ice: insights into ancient resistome, antimicrobial potential, and enzymatic activi... IntroductionAncient cryospheric environments may preserve overlooked reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and bioactive potential. This study reports...

Genome sequence of a 5,000 year old bacterium (Psychrobacter) from cave ice contains more than 100 genes associated with antimicrobial resistance 😳

Carpenter bug on top of stone

Carpenter bug on top of stone

The top of my dracaena plant fell down for no reason. When I looked inside the trunk, there was a bug buzzing that barely fit there 😱😱😱

It was the weirdest 80s witchcraft satan movie I’ve seen in real life (like the spider crawling out of the cheek in “the believers”). 😱😱

Hi! We're an alternative to Amazon's Audible, & here are a few things that people often don't know about us:

1. We have over 600k audiobooks in our catalog! You'll pretty much find whatever you want to read, other than Audible exclusives (but that's on them, not us)

Trends in transcript diversity as a function of effective population size proxy, ω (the rate of protein evolution controlling for the background rate, employing conserved single copy genes). Top: Transcript diversity as regards alternative splicing (AS) frequency. Bottom left: Transcript diversity as regards alternative polyadenylation (APA) usage. Bottom right: Transcript diversity as regards alternative transcript initiation (ATI) usage. Diversity is defined as the proportion of the transcriptome for each gene that is not the most abundant “canonical” form. For each figure, N is the sample size, ρ the Spearman rank correlation, P, the significance thereof and PPGLS, the significance of the correlation allowing for shared ancestry.

While it's tempting to suppose that everything that happens inside our cells has a function, Laurence Hurst explores a study in @plosbiology.org showing that the high diversity of transcripts in mammals is down to the fact that accidents happen... 🧪 Paper: plos.io/3Pcs2e6 Primer: plos.io/47Go2J2

If you get your hands on a decent UV flashlight or other UV light source, try pointing it at a bruised banana.

You'll have the opportunity to observe a phenomenon called "blue halos of death" caused by cellular senescence & the breakdown of chlorophyll in the fruit peel.

Let's talk about it.
