Hampshire College is closing, which is a real tremor in the fabric of Western Mass. I didn't go to Hampshire, but I've spent some time on campus, as a graduate student advisor to the student newspaper, and as a visitor. It was the quirky kid of the Five Colleges. www.masslive.com/education/20...

No grades is egalitarian in spirit, but also has practical effects. People often argue that having grades is pragmatic, but in spirit, it is pro-hierarchy. One of the jobs we give higher education, whether we admit to it or not, is to justify inequality and elitism.
I didn't go to Hampshire, but while I was a graduate student at UMass, I advised their student newspaper for a year and took a class on experimental colleges there. My brother went to New College in Florida, which was drawn up on the same blueprint. It is a very sad development for them to close.
LifePath has some resources. My parents get some support from them in Greenfield.

There was supposed to be heavy rain that day. We thought about not taking the ferry. But I’m glad we did.
My family and I were there a couple of weeks ago.

More than we can bear, it feels like sometimes.
I haven’t reached a conclusion about the argument, but my guess is that I’m going to struggle with it.
My daughter has started reading “We Never Have Been Woke” and now she’s talking non-stop about Symbolic Capitalism. press.princeton.edu/books/hardco...
We woke up with military strikes on Iran. Why? we asked, phone out, still in bed. The possible answers swim in my head like fish. It is all cynicism.
