A new phD position in my lab about amphibian, infection diseases in a global changing world. Check it out! And spread the word ;)
We have a new exiting opportunity to join our program with a new PhD position supervised by @dbergerbiol.bsky.social co-supervised by @gmkov.bsky.social on the repeatability of evolution in seed beetles! Click the link to read more and apply! www.uu.se/en/about-uu/...

Hi all. I am very excited that after 6 years I finally got my phylogenetic comparative methods book and online exercises online. Feel free to use and share. The book is here: nhcooper123.github.io/pcm-primer/. Note that it is not finished, we had to abandon it before the sunk costs fallacy broke us
Massive thanks to @danielwanoble.bsky.social and @gwendeconninck.bsky.social for some awesome quality of life additions to metRscreen (a shiny app for paper screening in R).

Making music with the birds 🐦🎶
Read this new piece on a portable, outdoor toolkit that combines:
🐦 listen to birds → 🎙️ record them → 🥁 turn them into beats
📖 Open access: esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
Turning bird sounds into music creates joy, curiosity, and connection.
Ecologists love response ratios for meta-analysis❤️
But… they can’t be converted into other effect sizes—making it impossible to have a unified dataset of all published effect sizes in ecology
I fix this with a conversion to Hedges’ d to help unify our data!

Our meta-analysis on ecological predictors of plant responses to sequential herbivory is now published in April issue of @newphyt.bsky.social nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

We suggest a need for a systems modelling approach to predict the effects of extreme heat and propose a path forward on how we can do it! www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Many journals require data and code sharing. Yet code is still rarely shared and datasets are often hard to reuse.
Our new paper introduces the @sortee.bsky.social guidelines for data & code quality control in ecology & evolution, developed by 26 experienced data editors.

How does development shape the variation evolution can act on?
In our new paper in @pnas.org , we bridge developmental dynamics and quantitative genetics, linking dynamical models of phenotype formation with the statistical parameters used to study evolutionary change

Thrilled to share our new preprint:
“Extreme Heat as the New Normal” 🌡️🔥
We introduce a roadmap + code for identifying and mapping extreme heat 📏 and linking it to ecology:
🧭 Species distribution models 🐦

Surprise! The Jeff Bezos-owned Washington Post is against my 5% billionaire wealth tax. I wonder why?
If enacted, Bezos would owe $12 billion in taxes, and an average family of 4 would receive a $12,000 direct payment.
Poor Jeff would be left with just $224 billion to survive.
Simulated trait distributions for two groups with different shapes. Top left: distinct skewness. Top right: distinct kurtosis. Bottom: different correlations between two traits for two groups.
Differences between M & F are pervasive, but we often focus on #SexDifferences in the mean. @pietropollo.bsky.social @danielwanoble.bsky.social @itchyshin.bsky.social &co present #stats tools that allow comparison of #skewness, #kurtosis & correlations b'n groups @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/4093nJs

New paper in @natrevbiodiv.nature.com - on 'Building on monitoring and conservation policies for global soil biodiversity'
www.nature.com/articles/s44...
We
1.describe key role soil biodiversity play in ecosystem functions & SDGS.
2. propose framework to address current policy challenges
Me too! It’s growing fast and there’s lots of cool ideas floating around! More soon as we get underway. There will be more projects posted in the near future on various taxa

I love how Rep. Joe Neguse reframed this question.
This year's #SORTEE2025 conference was very inspiring and full of fresh ideas! For those who haven’t heard of it yet, SORTEE is a community that supports open methods, reproducible results, and real collaboration across borders and fields. I strongly recommend everyone to join!
