When my parents randomly ask about my ex as just a childhood friend… “Why don’t you two talk anymore?”

“Uh…” *awkward breakup flashbacks*

All that way too long set of replies to say that I don’t know if there is really an easy solution or fix to a small, hard-to-identify part of the community being elitist and unkind or coming to inaccurate conclusions about inaccessibility and what “counts”/is “good” shiny hunting.

Even if your algorithm puts you in the good shiny hunting community, how you engage with it can shape your perceptions & misunderstandings. Most social media users are passive, so I could see people who just watch multi-hunts without asking questions could feel that good shiny hunting requires it.

So, although the vast majority and the most visible parts of the shiny hunting community are fantastic, welcoming, and inclusive, algorithms and such could lead people to be stuck in particularly unkind subcommunities we see and know nothing about.

So, I think it’s highly likely that there are groups that engage in elitism, even if they aren’t visible and known to the whole community. Some may also just be clout-chasers, trolls, and overly critical shiny hunting watchers. This creator seems like they have encountered bullying from such people.

I think some of what the video creator has experienced may be related to the fact that the internet can be so big and siloed that, although it’s hard to tell, there are multiple subcommunities of shiny hunters/shiny hunting fans. Even just a split between shiny hunters mainly on Bluesky vs. Twitter

Ownership without continuous subscription fees, things being built without planned obsolescence, no need for continuous internet connection, no data or privacy concerns, no designs meant to capture and hold attention for ad dollars and opaque algorithms, personal control over media content exposure

Or you could just regulate AI before you regulate the human genome to do some eugenics

Yeah, it’s interesting how often “men are so lonely we have to help them” is connected with “certain women not liking them”/“them not liking how certain women act,” and some people truly never step back and really examine it…

(It’s not TAs being properly compensated that’s an issue. It’s the odd choices. This work would go to grad students at my uni & they’d get a tuition waiver/etc, so it makes sense if they have been expecting the same work of UG TAs that they’d want similar compensation. Weird no one considered that?)

… bc having undergrads do this work at all is odd & the funding approach feels weird, especially when they don’t even use these positions to prioritize students who benefit most from financial aid for tuition. Then, they just add AI into the situation, too. It seems like a mess of their own making…

Undergrad TAs grading & getting paid was a surprise bc neither happen at my university, & seeing how much they’re paid had me choking. It’s 2x my salary as FT faculty (I know it’s cost of living diffs/tuition waiver stuff). Not saying they shouldn’t be compensated, but it’s a strange setup to me…

I may not be in the same field, but I would have had so much fun with an assignment like that! Pedagogically, it sounds like it’s doing everything right and recommended to engage and motivate them to do the work and succeed. I am so, so sorry that this happened 😞

Choosing a cool reading approach pedagogically that will help them learn and develop and students not wanting/trying to do it is always hard…

I had a moment like this yesterday. They were asked to think about a research article’s findings, but they kept just pulling from the initial literature review. They couldn’t provide 1 detail on results/conclusions. I just shut it down, rather than pull teeth, & moved on, but it is so frustrating.

Had a good cry with my mom today about friend troubles, work troubles, health troubles, and world troubles.

You really just got to do your best with what you can right now.

Amazingly, in analogy, having KKK-wannabes be the opposing side to anti-racist scholars in a debate would also cause similar reactions, but would you still tell people who are angry to go and engage in dialogue with the KKK-wannabes to help us tackle racism? Would you really?
