Exciting news!! The CHIRP team (headed by Fiona Kouyoumdjian @macdeptmed.bsky.social & @marthapaynter.bsky.social & many more including me) has its first publication out. By linking Stats Can data, we FINALLY have a credible estimate of how many Canadian children have a parent in prison. Gift link:

Why are police allowed to investigate themselves?

🥚We have serious issues in Canada regarding both knowledge of, and access to, records concerning babies born to criminalized and incarcerated women and girls in every type of carceral institution.
🥚
Eugenic ideology shaped laws, abusive institutions, and forced sterilization. Today, federal and provincial disclosure laws still hide the experiences of women and girls in Canada labeled “incorrigible,” blocking access to records.

🥚Who has read Torn Apart by Dorothy Roberts? This article touches on the history of Charles Loring Brace and the orphan trains—does the book go in depth over the decades of the evolving child welfare system?

🥚"Since the 2000s, quantitative research has consistently found that Sweden's over 60,000 foreign-born adoptees are severely affected in terms of mental ill-health and social problems and not least suicide attempts and suicides."

🥚Good discussion about being a working-class writer in Canada & the ruling class.
It made me think of adoptees—whose stories get told, and which don’t. Especially prison adoptees. How many of these have you read?

🥚"... Justice Minister Jung Sung-ho said the country’s past adoptions amounted to “forced child trafficking” and that the government will largely refrain from appealing rulings in cases brought by victims seeking compensation for government wrongdoing"
🥚She searches for herself in the "Today's Child" column on children for adoption: "I realized that some of the language sounded familiar because it was used during the 18th and 19th centuries in both slave auction ads and fugitive slave ads to describe Black people who were enslaved in Canada."
🥚Possibly disappeared Mercer babies—records unobtainable. Hidden behind the YCJA and CYFSA, likely thousands of adoptees and their descendants remain unaware of a carceral birth history. We've had 3 wins and now one loss👇
🥚Actually, adoption systems worldwide—domestic and international—must be investigated, including children of young mothers who were criminalized and incarcerated, whose records are restricted by youth disclosure laws, concealing the truth of their adoption.

Cody of Houle Fine Art’s grandmother, Cecile, survived residential schools but faced further injustice—jailed at Mercer while her children were taken in the Sixties Scoop. She died soon after release; her children never knew.

Is the federal government still spying on Indigenous groups? The answer was no—yet not long ago, it tracked First Nations advocate Cindy Blackstock.
Definitely needs an investigation.

"...young people – especially working-class, racialized, and those labelled ‘sexually precocious’ – experienced unprecedented intervention from police in the name of protection, prevention, and discipline."

The government says proposed changes to Ontario’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) will modernize the law, protect privacy, and enhance security. The facts tell a different story. Read the full statement: www.ipc.on.ca/en/media-cen...
🥚Fascinating… 1970 vital statistics for marriages of girls aged 16 and under in Ontario (Table 18, p. 83). This is only a snippet, but the total number of such marriages was 1,913.
In 1950, marriages for girls aged 16 and under numbered 1,014, with one bridegroom aged 50–54.
