Quick and Meaningless Data Collection Help me collect some data to use for student examples! The questions on geographic region and gender will only be used for subsetting the data, not for student analysis. No questions are required -…

I NEED HELP!

Please take this quick, meaningless 19 question survey so I can get data for my students to learn stats!

I did a similar version a few months ago but missed an important question type. Even if you did the old one, please do it again!

Please circulate widely!

I'd add, our government remains all over Elon Musk's Nazi site, as do many other institutions, associations, and 'respectable' people for some inexplicable reason.

Canada’s elbows-elevated ambition to secure digital & technological sovereignty faces a lot of practical hurdles.

But, at a minimum, it requires disentangling government and public services from at least this one company. If they continue to operate here, everything else is just hand-waving.

Happy National Garlic 🧄 Day! Greeks & Romans loved garlic—but Mesopotamians loved it 1000s of years before them. The Greek ἄγλις (Latin alium) is an Akkadian loan word. At Pompeii, there was even a garlic seller (aliarii) workshop ( 📸 by @pompei79.bsky.social): pompeiiinpictures.com/pompeiiinpic...

🧵Tradwife culture is moving further into the mainstream. People who watch this film will likely come away with a better sense of the performance, hypocrisy and marketing behind the movement. But, the real issue is the way tradwife content functions as an algorithmic gateway into far-right ideology.

That is bizarre! We’ve cancelled all our cross-border geology field trips because we can’t guarantee students’ safety.

This is more broadly generalizable: If you don't do the research yourself, you have no idea if AI is making stuff up. And if you do the research yourself, then AI isn't saving you much labor, if any.

I Bought a House and Became Part of the Problem | The Walrus Homeownership is now a retirement plan, pension substitute, nest egg. And that’s exactly what’s broken

A few years ago, I bought a house with the aim of making it my home. I succeeded. But I also became part of a serious national problem, and shame.

Look forward to hearing how they plan to do this without verifying everyone’s identity on social media to make sure you’re not a teenager

Dayna! Sophia called about your jewelry repair! It's ready to pick up but they're closing early today at 6 so you'd better hurry.

So there's a person named Dayna who keeps giving out my number to all and sundry and I'd really like her to stop, except I have no way to contact her. I get messages for her every day. Considering turning them all into a slam poem that I can perform until someone recognizes her and tells her to stop

Why the AI backlash has turned violent And why it's probably only going to get worse from here.

Last week, a 20 year-old man threw a molotov cocktail at Sam Altman's mansion; two days later, people fired a gun at it. Earlier that week, someone fired gunshots into an city councilman's house who approved a data center.

Mark Carney gets his majority, thanks in part to two women eho have fought for public services in Canada. Funny, given how he is defending public services! Here's my 2 minute take.

Yipeng holding a sign in clinic that reads “healthcare should never depend on status”.

I am a family doctor and public health researcher, and I oppose Carney’s cruel cuts to refugee healthcare. I join healthcare workers in 9 cities across the country today to demand access to publicly funded universal healthcare for ALL regardless of status. #NoCutsToCare

New Oil and Gas Projects Heighten Canada's Financial Risk With the transition away from fossil fuels under way, gaining momentum, and picking up  a major boost from the past month of energy price shocks, Canadian banks, provinces, and the larger economy remain heavily exposed to the financial risk of continuing to prop up oil and gas companies, warns Carbon Tracker.

Despite Apocalyptic Warnings, California Fast Food Wage Hike Didn’t Kill Jobs UC Berkeley study finds employment held steady — and only pennies were added to menu prices.

A new report from the University of California shows that the state's decision to raise the minimum wage for fast food workers to $20/hr didn’t hurt jobs, or raise prices much.

Data from over 2,000 restaurants shows that the $20/hr minimum wage didn’t reduce employment.

"Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei has said he is open to the idea that Claude may already have some form of consciousness, and company leaders frequently talk about the need to give it a moral character."

This is a sales pitch, and journalism that doesn't highlight this has failed.

Weird autocorrect of the day: I typed trepanation. Autocorrect changed it to reparation. Not even remotely the same thing, and why not something with vaguely similar spelling like trepidation?
