Here's my breaking up with Harry Potter essay comic- if you need some fuel to convince relatives or friends not to watch the new show, maybe this will help: redgoldsparkspress.com/projects/718...
I do think this is true. I'm often guilty myself of underplaying what the work I do looks like or how much time and effort it takes. Research isn't 'just reading' or a question of sucking up summaries others have created. It's knowledge creation.
So let me go through the process with an example 1/
Sharp-eyed catch of the day: found a linked en dash/hyphen masquerading as an em dash. #amediting
Badgey from Star Trek: Lower Decks, in Clippy instructional mode on the holodeck with a huge smile and arms indicating a can-do attitutde
Hi! It looks like you're trying make a "meme" with generative AI.
Would you like to eat shit and die in a fire instead?
This is very true, and also you can't go wrong starting with the fabulous books by @adibkhorram.bsky.social. I just devoured I'll Have What He's Having and It Had to be Him while on vacation, and can't wait for the next. Sexy, sweet, comforting, and oh so fun.
I am suddenly very excited for a bar crawl in the city soon.
Engraved on a red heart shape: Roses are red, violets are blue, singular they's older than singular you.
A timely valentine from Dr Grammar: pronouns have histories.
This was actually really cool to see for a moment. So much goes into making sure you can see all the angles and reactions, and so many people have put huge effort into making all this happen.
That said, I would give up the drone shots to never hear that whizzing noise again.
I want the pierogi so much.
Someone should really tell all the Olympic athletes with facial hair that this mustache is how you will be remembered. Choose wisely.
Followed to make sure I don't miss this.
As far as I can tell!
I love this color - I have it in my kitchen and dining room, and railings.
Paddington in Star Trek
I Photoshop Paddington into a movie, TV show, or pop culture until I forget: Day 1784
Very dusty Baba-Yaga style doll - an old woman with a giant nose dressed with a headscarf and frumpy apron. For some reason, she has metal circles for hands holding a curved stick. She was found facing the back corner of a dusty cupboard behind a stack of various rocks and books. She now watches over the seed trays and seems happier for it.
Oh, this one?
A stylized ruffed grouse bird spreads its wings on this riff on the Rebel Alliance logo. The bird is in the center of a circle, painted in shades of red, green, yellow, and black, in the style of a Pennsylvania Dutch folk painting. A small eight pointed star is to the right of the bird’s head. Under the logo is the text “Pennsylvania Civil Resistance”
I love this spectacular Ruffed Grouse Pennsylvania resistance bird by Jen Rand ( @jenrand.bsky.social ). The star is a nod to the Quaker tenet of nonviolence, and the style harks back to PA Dutch folk art.
Oh this looks awesome, and I needed a new audiobook!
My oldest silpat is from 2002. Most from 2006. Haven't bought another since, even though they are used almost daily for everything from roasting meat to freezing veggies to baking.
Buy a few of the real things before they are gone forever.
Scott Adams dying at 68 rather than 69 is the perfect capstone to a life of being almost — but not quite — funny
This is an EXCELLENT thread.
Our cat has discovered the existence of an attic - which is extremely dirty, we emptied it but still need to do a deep clean - and now sits by the closed door crying because she wants to go roll in the dirt and lick the spiderwebs.
Where is the Cinnamon Toast Crunch?
We got Weird Al out here singing Killing In The Name, the time for moderation is over
Hey it's *Bandcamp Friday* again. The best day to go find that artist who was top of your Spotify unwrapped and actually buy their music, because all the proceeds go to them today. And by god do musicians need it.
It is a truth universally acknowledged that when you have absolutely nowhere to go, that is when your hair shall look its best.
Saved by Stoppard Sir, In 1993 my wife and I went to see the first production of Arcadia by Tom Stoppard (obituary, Dec I), and in the interval I experienced a Damascene conversion. As a clinical scientist I was trying to understand the enigma of the behaviour of breast cancer, the assumption being that it grew in a linear trajectory spitting off metastases on its way. In the first act of Arcadia, Thomasina asks her tutor, Septimus: "If there is an equation for a curve like a bell, there must be an equation for one like a bluebell, and if a bluebell, why not a rose?" With that Stoppard explains chaos theory, which better explains the behaviour of breast cancer. At the point of diagnosis, the cancer must have already scattered cancer cells into the circulation that nest latent in distant organs. The consequence of that hypothesis was the birth of "adjuvant systemic chemotherapy", ", and rapidly we saw a striking fall of the curve that illustrated patients' survival. Stoppard never learnt how many lives he saved by writing Arcadia. Michael Baum Professor emeritus of surgery; visiting professor of medical humanities, UCL r.
Alt text for those who need it. This is amazing.
Joke's on Santa, I really want the new and beautiful 12th Edition of the @merriam-webster.com Dictionary under the tree this year!
(But seriously. That, and the Lego Enterprise NCC-1701-D.)
