A group of thieves was in and out of an Italian museum in just 3 minutes, stealing paintings worth millions. The theft happened a week ago but is only announced now (which I consistently maintain is a bad strategy as it gives the thieves a chance to fence the goods). www.bbc.com/news/article...

You want paintings with alchemists and philosophers? Wright of Derby's your guy. file770.com/alchemy-at-w...
I wrote a piece about Wright of Derby's intricate paintings showcasing 18th-century science and views of the world.
This is beautiful and devastating. As you figure out what's next for you, remember that it doesn't just have to be one thing. Lots of hugs
Poem that reads: A piglet's most precious possession Is the teat that he fattens his flesh on. He fights for his teat with tenacity Against any sibling's audacity. The piglet, to arm for this mission, Is born with a warlike dentition Of eight tiny tusks, sharp as sabres, Which help in impressing the neighbors; But to render these weapons less harrowing, Most farmers remove them at farrowing. We studied pig sisters and brothers When some had their teeth, but not others. We found that when siblings aren't many, The weapons help little if any, But when there are many per litter, The teeth help their owners grow fitter. But how did selection begin To make weapons to use against kin?
Today's gem is the summary of this research paper on sibling rivalry in piglets. The authors wrote it as a POEM. I'm in porcine awe:
A piglet's most precious possession
Is the teat that he fattens his flesh on.
He fights for his teat with tenacity
Against any sibling's audacity...

Raymond Chandler's crotchetiness with publishers and film folks is breathtaking.

I wrote this piece for @jstordaily.bsky.social about the painter Wayne Thiebaud, who lived to be 101, and was iconic for his paintings of American fair and diner food: daily.jstor.org/wayne-thieba...
Saw the Disney musical Hercules while in London this weekend, except I read Wearing the Lion a couple months ago and so the musical was overlaid with serious @wiswell.bsky.social vibes. (Needless to say, I enjoyed it.)
Three gumball machines filled with brightly colored candies
Admiring Thiebaud’s paintings, abstract expressionist painter Barnett Newman told him that “[t]hose European surrealists are boys compared to what you can do with a gumball machine. That’s a real surreal object in you.” daily.jstor.org/wayne-thieba...
Wayne Thiebaud (1920–2021) was fired from Disney for being a union man, went on to create topographical models of Japan in WWII, and was labelled a "Pop Artist" by critics. He outlived all the other Pop Artists, and most of his critics, and thought Warhol was 👎 daily.jstor.org/wayne-thieba...
