Her compatriots sleep with full bellies after a dinner of roasted boar and stone fruit harvested near the campsite, a deserved reward after the day’s successful skirmish on the Nohrian border. Smoke trails from the cooking fire still burning, which muddles Kagero’s view of the stars. She tucks her hands behind her back, trying not to play with the wakizashi tucked into her belt. A ninja must not give into boredom, no matter how peaceful the night is. After all, a Nohrian spy or wild animal could take advantage of a tired guard’s complacency after her army’s victory. Kagero rests her eyes for a moment and resolves to sharpen her focus. She recalls Lord Ryoma’s advice about meditative breathing, picturing a drop of water falling into a pond. Inhale. Perfect circles radiate from the center. Exhale. Another drop plummets. Inhale. A shriek rings out sharply in the dark.

Leo thought he'd be married off someday. That makes sense. For some reason I never really thought about marriage, even though my situation was similar. Really, whenever I looked towards my future, I couldn't see anything in front of me. Not love, or family, or the fate of the kingdom. Just nothing.
