Using AI to improve (not automate away) academic research Blog about fatherhood, langauge, developmental psychology, and cognitive science.

Just wrote a new blogpost trying to summarize my thoughts on the question of how and whether to use AI for research in psychology and cognitive science: babieslearninglanguage.blogspot.com/2026/04/usin...

Neues Beispiel für Prototypentheorie just dropped. Welche KI-generierte Brücke ist die brückigste?

Justify Your Prompts! Abstract. When you use a large language model (LLM) in your research, you often need to formulate a prompt to elicit some relevant output from the LLM. This step is challenging since (1) LLMs are know...

Here is one reason you might want to treat whitespace separately: words w/ and w/o a leading whitespace get tokenized differently.

Having a separate whitespace token would unify a lot of these.

Title page for the paper “A systematic framework for generating novel experimental hypotheses from language models”, with an epigraph from Jeff Elman describing how Rumelhart and McClelland (1982) did hypothesis generation with their connectionist network, and a figure describing our pipeline.

Announcing a new version of our 2024 paper on linguistic hypothesis generation from LMs!

@najoung.bsky.social and I have systematized our hypothesis generation framework, added stringent criteria for model selection, 10x-ed our learning trials, and included an epigraph from Jeff Elman 🙏!

You Can't Fight in Here! This is BBS! Norm, the formal theoretical linguist, and Claudette, the computational language scientist, have a lovely time discussing whether modern language models can inform important questions in the language ...

Richard @futrell.bsky.social and I have posted our response to the commentaries on our BBS target article "How Linguistics Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Language Models." The response is: "You Can't Fight in Here! This is BBS!" arxiv.org/abs/2604.09501

I am disappointed that the question "Is AI in a bubble" has reduced to the question "Do any AI companies generate revenue?"

I was very intrigued to learn that Mythos is actually a model of the human mind, and this AI system definitively proves - beyond any doubt - that the human mind operates like an LLM.

Complaining on social media with YouTube in another tab, Spotify playing while ordering an Uber and scrolling your cloud backed up photos is like driving to the grocery story while cursing the existence of roads.

New paradigm alert! 🎮

AgenticPCG

We combine classic PCG (Procedural Content Generation) algorithms with large language models for generating game levels. LLMs on their own are not good at level generation, but when given the right tools from our PCG toolbox they're killing it!
