Looking like 2024’s record sea surface temperatures may soon be broken - and that’s *before* the El Niño predicted for later this year kicks in, further supercharging climate impacts.

It’s time for emergency action at a wartime scale both to prepare and to cut emissions.

Can we finally agree that burning wood for energy is a terrible idea and won't be carbon neutral, let alone carbon negative, in our lifetimes? BECCS using wood certainly shouldn't qualify as CO₂ removal (CDR).

I think one of the reasons generative AI is so deeply grating is that storytelling was an adaptive trait that made (and makes) us human. I'm writing my communication book chapter now and this struck me- not in a present sense but in a deep time sense.

Billions in crypto deals while gutting regulation of the industry.

Three scientists in a peat bog, surrounded by brown and green hummocks of heather and cotton grass. Between them, a slender pipe (a corer) reaches upwards into the bright blue sky.

Collecting peat cores at Cors Caron in western Wales last May. We hit the clay basement at 8.5m! We are just getting the data in now - past vegetation transitions had a big impact on the peat composition and that still shapes the microbiology today!

Peatland legacies persist for millenia.

Two hooded figures with lamps approach a moonlit, isolated cottage.
A woman answers the door.
We have come for the child, says the hooded figure
So soon? she asks
It is time, says the hooded figure.
The woman is distraught. We should never have got him a library card!
What is done cannot be undone, says the hooded figure
We couldn’t see the harm! We just wanted him to enjoy reading!
For most, it ends there, says the hooded figure, turning away and walking into the wilderness
Oh lord, What have I done! says the woman,
the child walks past her and out into the darkness with them.
Do not cry mother.
I am a writer now.

€1.3 billion for peatland rewetting: A major step towards climate action in Europe.

But how do these costs compare to the benefits?

A recent study by SGGW shows that the value of ecosystem benefits is 10 to 50 times higher than restoration costs. Do not belive it read the study

This is just unconscionable.

No one is illegal, & the bar to obtaining asylum is high. Reversing an asylum decision would be hideously cruel & threatening to do so would leave ppl in a horrendous situation of insecurity.

Our current research explores how these differences in vegetation affect organic matter composition, preservation and microbes. Peat is a fascinating environment, where there is plenty of organic matter to "eat" but its structure, as well as peatland pH and anoxia means bacteria are energy starved.

It's harder to measure but I feel like RFK Jnr shutting down funding for MRNA research is actually up there with DOGE cuts and this latest Iranian war as a contender for Most Evil Things Trump II has done. Accounted properly, this regime is really wracking up 20th-century-dictator kill counts imo.

And Labour decided to give these fuckers our data

Well - and it’s my daily minuta of small pet peeves - this is the 3rd time I’ve seen a claim that dashes are a sure-fire giveaway that text is Chat GPT written. For the record: I’ve written like this for 33 years, having observed that the brain absorbs info better that way. And no, I never use AI 🤷🏼‍♀️

If women were 9 out of 10 stalkers, it's all we would talk about.

If women committed 97% of sexual assaults, it's all we would talk about.

Men wanna squabble over "62 million views doesn't mean 62 million men" & we're giving them the space & grace we would never afford women in ANY circumstance.

Cleddon bog in the Wye Valey. On the right are grassy mounds, between which pool black waters. On the left is a gorse shrub, its spiky leaves offset by bright yellow flowers. In the distance is a bright green line of birch trees, their leaves in spring flush. And beyond those are rows if dark pine, the pine plantations on Ninewells Wood.

A mosaic of natural, manmade and human-influenced ecosystems at Cleddon Bog. Tussocks of moor grass and softvrush intermingle with black water pools of Sphagnum. But gorse, heather, birch and hazel are encroaching due to nutrient runoff, and drying the bog. Looming over all is a pine plantation.
