I've got a review up at @nerdsofafeather.bsky.social today of The Language of Liars by S. L. Huang. It's a thoughtful, substantial novella tackling language, politics, culture and power, and one that absolutely kicked me in the face by the end (in the best possible way).

I probably said that wrong! she was saying she didn't understand what to take away from it, like what the themes were. which is fair! it is a big pile of chaos! it doesn't really lend itself to textual interpretation because it's all just nonsense!
AWWW I hope y'all have the best time
right! I said that, and she looked bewildered.
she was like "yeah we were on reddit for hours trying to make sense of it" and I was like "oh, no, see"
my gen Z coworker watched Rocky Horror for the first time and came to my office to let me know that she is not sure she understood what message it was sending
I feel like a lot of the "lol the hypocrisy" takes on this are missing the point that the aim isn't really ever to "retvrn to the classics", it's to destroy the university by making it untenable for professors to do their work in these conditions so they leave and that is unfortunately succeeding 🫤
A graphic with text on it that says: "Responsibilities of a ship detective aboard the HMS Fairweather: 1. Keep the passengers of the ship safe on their centuries-long journey. 2. Sort out the truth from the lies. 3. Don't get too judgy about the deceased. 4. Don't fall in love with the victim's wife. 5. When things get tricky, drink some tea."
Some good things for Dorothy Gentleman to bear in mind as the detective on the HMS Fairweather...🚀
Becky Chambers meets Miss Marple in Murder by Memory by @oliviawaite.com, a sci-fi ode to the cozy mystery, helmed by a formidable no-nonsense auntie of a detective!
really worth it, you absolutely nailed that
Friends, could you help me share this Kickstarter? It’s doing well but I need to extend its reach: www.kickstarter.com/projects/158...
thank you for "confederacy of Salieris", that has been very good for me
holy shit hahahha
I've been referencing this essay by @mollytempleton.com a lot lately in conversations about reading fantasy and other literature. Templeton's piece includes a discussion of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick's useful ideas about 'paranoid' and 'reparative' approaches to reading. reactormag.com/on-learning-...
I think a lot, just like a living fuckton, of research. also I would die because all writing is at least theoretically for public consumption, and I would die if I couldn't write for one whole year.
as an exercise to protect my peace, I have started to read the word "sale" as "salad." recommended. great stuff.
YIKES INDEED
well, I hope he will reflect upon it afterward! I said twice that it freaks me out / scares me when men yell at me from cars. for heaven's sake!!
really strange! I have never encountered this before.
nah, it's okay, I just said no politely. I don't reeeeeeally feel threatened when this happens because the area where I walk is well-populated, but also like: agh!
yeah, I said my mama told me never to get in cars with strangers. which is true!
a man stopped me on my walk and said he felt "convicted" to ask me out. I have never heard the word used this way before. is this a Jesus thing?
oh it was when Noah made notes on how to be dommy in a like, hot yet respectful way. just very fucking sweet! and a lovely overall character/relationship note, as well!
@adibkhorram.bsky.social btw I am finally FINALLY reading It Had to Be Him, and I hit a point in the book where I was simply unraveled by the characters' loveliness. you are great. truly reminding me why I love romance.
thirded
I have loved Fortesa Latifi's journalism in the past, so my hopes are sky-high. I started reading a bit of it, and immediately the like... journey from the radical honesty of mommy blogging to the family influencers of today feels so fucking depressing
Alex, I feel so exhausted for you.
it is in!sane! to me! do men know that it is IN THEIR INTEREST to not be horrible to me? they are 1000% more likely to get to fuck me if they are not awful shitheads! and yet it is somehow still more important to perform hateful masculinity for an imagined audience of other hateful men!
and so much of it seems to be about like, their resentment at receiving feedback. like they think it should be illegal for women to talk back to them and have separate opinions.
"men are lonely, and the solution is literally anything except them proactively choosing not to be loathsome"
oh ho HO ho ho I have gotten the Fortesa Latifi book about child influencers and I will be chowing down on this like it's a bucket full of snow crab
