Congratulations to the people of Hungary today!
Also, we have no idea how we feel about this other world news event.

Our PhD student Kennedy Orwa, who studies applications of AI to health care, was hastily deported today to Kenya along with his 13-year-old son without opportunity to speak to legal counsel.
King 5 reports that he held a valid visa that was rescinded without explanation.
The President is openly threatening genocide. A crime against humanity. He must be removed from office.
The 25th Amendment must be invoked. If not, Congress has to do our damn job. Speaker Johnson, call us into session. War powers & impeachment. Remove this man from office.
At the end of the day, we as profs have to decide whether we want tenure or whether we want the illusion of it. If the university can fire us over tweets, overruling the faculty vote, then there is no tenure, there is no shared governance. it’s just fantasy.
Ah #linguistics, it's discourse time (you know who I mean)
@jmhenner.bsky.social you would be so proud of us!

“Rowling has made it abundantly clear that she thinks attacking transgender people via the legal system is a worthwhile cause and a good use of her vast personal fortune…there’s no way to watch this show without supporting Rowling’s bigotry and the structural violence she’s inflicting…”
I haven't quite figured out how to productively convey my AI-hatership in co-author situations, but I have made progress on updating my lab manual for doctoral students:
This line graph illustrates the percentage change in agency staff levels from the previous year for nine major U.S. federal scientific and health organizations between the fiscal years 2016 and 2025. The agencies tracked include the CDC, Department of Energy, EPA, FDA, NASA, NIH, NIST, NOAA, and NSF. For the majority of the timeline between 2016 and 2023, the agencies show relatively stable fluctuations, generally staying within a range of +5% to -5% change per year. However, there is a dramatic and uniform plummet starting in the 2024–25 period. Every agency depicted shows a sharp downward trajectory, with staffing losses ranging from approximately -15% to over -25%. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows the most significant decline, dropping to roughly -26%, while the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) shows the least severe but still substantial drop at approximately -15%.
This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.

At some point, we have to think about what it means to do peer review in disciplines where an ever growing number of scholars are being shut out of the security of tenure-line faculty appointments
National Farmers Day! The people makes up the movement not one individual
Dolores Huerta's statement on Cesar Chavez: “I am nearly 96 years old, and for the last 60 years have kept a secret because I believed that exposing the truth would hurt the farmworker movement I have spent my entire life fighting for... I can no longer stay silent and must share my own experiences"
obviously this story wouldn't have been any less dark if this wasn't true, but I really wasn't prepared for one of the victims to have been Dolores Huerta
Wow, given how much bad behavior is already public knowledge and has been for years, these new allegations must be really bad
I’m sorry to say that I’ve heard many variations of this story.
Most universities won’t take any action about professors dating their students. But communities ie parents and other adults can — see what happened with UNM Anthropology!

Five years ago today, the Asian American community was rocked by this horrific, racist attack.
Eight people were killed—six of whom were Asian women—and one other person was injured.
Craptions!

If Ryan Coogler makes you want to learn ASL please do. Take a class. Learn from Deaf/HoH teachers. It's a beautiful language and culture and not enough places are Deaf accessible/friendly.
Picking up some Gen Z language — the “ate” word tripped me up bc I thought a Tagalog endearment term suddenly went viral, but the contexts of “ate”’ on social media didn’t fit what I thought it meant…

What if we paid humans for their labor for sign language interpretation and CART captioning? I think it’s really cool when people can exchange their skills for money so they can afford shelter, food, clothing, healthcare, hobbies, etc.
