Government to ‘double down not back down’ on clean energy in face of gas spike Key to the plans is breaking the link between gas and electricity prices

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO), an insulation scheme funded through energy bills, has been scrapped.

The latest version faced structural issues and needed an overhaul, but ECO has run for over a decade, supporting a steady supply chain for retrofit businesses.

So, what does this mean?

Keir Starmer has the mandate on climate and should ignore the back seat drivers Labour has a working majority in Westminster of 165 MPs. In 1945 the party had a 146-seat lead which it boldly used to create the NHS and the welfare state as we know it. But, although Labour won l…

This, from @green-alliance.org.uk's @hollybt.bsky.social, is spot on.

"These elections have once again exposed deep frustration with business as usual politics and people’s sense that their communities are being left behind. The government can’t be complacent."

Elections can change who runs the country and whose story gets heard. But these can be two different contests.

Climate plan based on phasing out fossil fuels doomed to fail, says Tony Blair Former PM claims net zero policies losing public support and says there should be greater focus on carbon capture

"This report is disappointing given Tony Blair’s strong track record on climate action, seeming to throw in the towel on avoiding the worst climate impacts and promoting defeatism instead of real solutions."

On the latest energy price cap increase, Holly Brazier Tope, head of politics at Green Alliance said "Once again energy bills are increasing for households, driven by our reliance on global markets and the volatile cost of gas. Current plans to accelerate a debt relief scheme and expand the Warm Homes Discount will protect over 6 million vulnerable households, but more action is needed. To lower bills for good, we must rapidly insulate homes and scale up homegrown renewables. The Warm Homes Plan should be rolled out without delay, with the promised £13.2 billion in funding, breaking the cycle of energy crises and lifting thousands out of fuel poverty once and for all. "

Today, the government is under criticism as the UK faces a third consecutive rise in the energy #pricecap. This trend will only continue if our energy market stays linked to the price of gas.

Particularly exciting from the gov response to the CCC this week was the announcement of a Public Participation Strategy, set to drop in 2025 🎉

Ambitious policies won't succeed unless the public are informed, involved and enabled to see themselves as part of the transition. More on this to come!
