Acceptable in the sense they were once secret and them being secret was an important part of their function.

Remember when the iPhone was rubbish at being a phone. Well now it’s rubbish at being a calendar. List view has the wrong dates 🤷

Not for the first time either. Much of Chicago’s modern history is about drainage and effluence.

The Speed of Hate On recent acts of fury over gender and race by the usual suspects.

And since he refers to it, and it doesn’t require headphones or a willing audience, here is a blog post he wrote which obliquely (at best) relates, but is germane and equally lovely (with some cripy edges - like a good steak or chip) thecosmicshamblesnetwork.substack.com/p/the-speed-...

Robin Ince (@robinince.bsky.social) infinite monkey cage host, author, poet, performer www.cosmicshambles.com

Odd to see @robinince.bsky.social appear in the headlines (although it’s his former touring partner’s that is the bait) rather randomly, but it has highlighted a rather lovely (and very Robin-like) podcast interview that should fill a happy couple of hours of anyone’s afternoon youtu.be/-agpiKNDgO4

Still need a pre-paid IdF mobilités “ticket”/carnet but can at least buy that without an extra app directly from with your apple/google wallet. Not much good if you can’t or don’t want to use a smart phone though… but some progress.

That’s Nestle Croydon on the right. An object lesson in commercial to resi conversion. Vacant since 2012. No idea why it was chosen but an interesting write up of this “Multiverse” of idents from 2022 theident.gallery/itv1-2022.php

Crazy ways to get to Australia. In fairness this was mostly driven by trying to use Avios to book and satisfying BA’s complex rules.

Can’t help on the origin bu it’s NOT quasi judicial. Hackney used to assert it was but J found it not to be the case in Holborn Studios

Coincidentally (I assume) both Eurostar and BA loyalty members’ magazines have features on Hackney this month. Here’s Eurostar’s Metropolitan Magazine metropolitan-eurostar.com/issues/autum...

Oh helpful. Though I suspect a little costly with storage space given the relative poor quality of the original material. I’ve just been comb filtering and transcoding to H.264/MP4 25fps rate and fixed bit rate to get then a sensible size.

Who remember component video? There’s a veritable cable spaghetti going on her just to finally digitize my last VHS tapes. SVHS - SVideo + 2ch audio - DVD recorder (acting as a TBC) - component + 2 ch audio - BMI ADC - SDI - digital recorder.

Turn Down the Streetlights What Seattle’s dark streets tell us about crime September 01, 2024 Years ago, I called the local electric and streetlight utility, Seattle City Light, to ask why the block around the corner was lit up...

A very interesting piece on the relationship between bright lights and crime in the #city
Our assumptions have always been the brighter the better, but apparently the data is telling us something different.

The likes of @bloor and @cybergibbons over on X have done a lot work on this proprietary system over the last few years including some almost identical combos only a few hundred meters apart - ie plausibly correct but fatally wrong.

Interestingly they would fail accessibility standards if used to differentiate elements next to each other on a web page but of course they aren’t really used that way on the map where we have other devices to distinguish them

Duolingo is getting increasingly weird. Here Falstaff has hidden Oscar’s laptop in the bin to stop him leaving a bad review of his fish stall, because he doesn’t have Oscar’s favourite catch.
