The Minister points out that the Banco de la Republica is deliberately destroying demand/growth in order to fight (future) inflationary pressures.

And implying that this is more than uber hawkish monetary policy, but deliberately trying to shape the election against progressive forces

This isn't because of Hormuz, or not primarily. It's because China cut its tax rebate on solar from 9% to 0, and on batteries from 9% to 6%, on April 1. Buyers have of course been putting in orders to build up inventory at the lower price right before the deadline.

The Palantir manifesto is so over the top fascist it's ludicrous but even knowing that, I did not expect straight up 'Japan and Germany need to re-arm' as a key point.

Of course the fact that Germany is doing much more on defence these days and is pro Ukraine does not fit in their world view.

21. Some cultures have produced vital advances; others remain dysfunctional and regressive. All cultures are now equal. Criticism and value judgments are forbidden. Yet this new dogma glosses over the fact that certain cultures and indeed subcultures . . . have produced wonders. Others have proven middling, and worse, regressive and harmful.

Point 21 is the giveaway, some cultures produce "wonders," others are "regressive and harmful." Once you accept that hierarchy, you've quietly been given permission to apply different standards of verification to different actors. The form of verification stays, but the democratic function doesn't.

They absolutely want the conversation to be "will this become as a god and judge mankind?!" instead of "what are we doing about all the guys using it to generate CSAM?"

Advertisement, and a way of shifting the conversation from real world harms to their cocaine-fueled delusions of grandeur.

They desperately want people talking about the danger of their dogshit extruder gaining sentience, and not the fact that it is currently actually factually poisoning Black people in the poor regions where they build data centers. Or convincing people to kill themselves, etc.

The billionaire sex pests pushing generative AI keep spinning up badly remembered science fiction scenarios of apocalypse, as both advertisement ("we are literally creating a god... it might be too powerful!") and as a way of shifting the conversation from its actual real world harms it already does

HSBC CEO “The highest I’ve seen, and I’m hoping we don’t see more of that, but the highest I’ve seen is $286 for a barrel of oil that reached Sri Lanka”

That’s a delivered barrel so includes shipping, insurance, etc.

But it’s still an eye-watering price to pay.

Everyone seems to think coal will get a big lift because of the oil&gas crisis, except for the professionals - the traders and plant operators. They're buying less of the stuff in April, not more. Note this includes within-country shipments which are big in e.g. China, Indonesia.

We're watching a bunch of guys convinced that everyone who had their jobs before them were just stupid slowly discovering - without learning a damn thing - that there were in fact very good reasons why no one did the 'obvious' thing before them.

This is why.

Captain Haddock looking very frazzled, saying, “What a week, huh?”
Tintin leans into the frame and says, “Captain, it’s Wednesday.”
Snowy aka Milou is very excited about the drink he has found.

Ok, I asked. The change in heart was due to both a steady rise in climate disasters that could no longer be ignored *and* the right messenger: insurance companies. "They're so conservative it isn't even funny. And at the core of their business is risk. Are you going to call them a bunch of hippies?"
