What you have to understand is that Keir Starmer, being Johnny from Johnny Got His Gun, is unable to perceive anything that happens around him.

I don’t disagree that Vlad is crazy and very scary. But “cut welfare to pay for missiles” is startlingly specific isn’t it, particularly when it’s coming from the political faction who are *very* enthusiastic about both cutting benefits and giving the Americans lots of money for goods and services.

Considering the increasingly toxic atitude towards disability & ill-health I see being bandied about both online and in IRL, and the role the media's "out of control" welfare narrative has in stoking it, I don't think it's unfair at all.

"After Labour won the 1997 general election and Tony Blair became the prime minister, Robertson was appointed Secretary of State for Defence.[14] He initiated the Strategic Defence Review,[15] which was completed in 1998. The review created the Joint Rapid Reaction Force and inaugurated the ambitious project to build two new large aircraft carriers for force projection, the Queen Elizabeth-class, and its new warplanes, symbolising the new government's commitment to defence."

I agree it probably would be a good thing if the UK had more air defenses & all that: too bad George here decided what really we needed was a bunch of aircraft carriers to patrol the South China Sea.

I'd take these jeremiads more seriously if just once there was some recognition of the fact that personel cuts aside, the UK's defence budget is still one of the largest in the world yet all we have to show for it is the Ajax & a handful of ships that sieze up the second they pass Bordeaux.

Yeah the whole "metropolitan elite" jibe was annoying & almost always levelled in bad faith by people as, if not more, privileged than those they were attacking but man, spend some time on here and/or peruse the pages of the sensible press & there's no denying there was a kernel of truth to it.

Hot on the heels of yesterday's two most read FT pieces: one asserting that populism stems from proles having too much free time & the other from a portfolio manager explaining how line almost always go up, except during covid, which gave people the troubling idea that government may help them.

Exact same story in the UK; very obviously gob fulls of money being thrown at this narrative wherever you are (and how demonstrably clapped out your reserves are)

and in the case of the UC health element - because Rachel Reeves wanted to shave a few billion off DWP's budget and Morgan Mcsweeny decided that fully leaning into SW1's oUt Of cOntrOL benefits narrative was the sure-fire way to polling success
