Affinity voting in Europe: the impact of religion, migration background and gender on preferences for in-group politicians | European Political Science Review | Cambridge Core Affinity voting in Europe: the impact of religion, migration background and gender on preferences for in-group politicians

The European Political Science Review (EPSR) has published my solo-authored paper on Affinity Voting in Europe 🤓

In it, I ask:

Do voters prefer in-group politicians?

Answer:

Sometimes, sometimes not. Minorities prefer their in-group less often than majorities do.

Very happy to be presenting some work in progress today at the EUI in beautiful Florence 🇮🇹☀️

In my paper Who’s Asking? Interviewer Gender and the Expression of Sexist Attitudes, I treat interviewer effects as a window into how social norms shape the expression of sexist attitudes.

👍Very excited to see that my solo-authored article:

"Surveying Minoritized Citizens:
A Quantitative Study of Identification versus Categorization"

has been published in Survey Research Methods✨

I hope survey researchers to reconsider how they survey group membership💪

What a wonderful moment to experience. I lived under Orbán 1, working at CEU… it was nothing compared to what was to come under Orbán 2. So many friends were impacted.

Now, many years too late, it is finally the end of Orbán 2. Tomorrow we can talk about the challenges. Today we celebrate!

Keeping this for the future: Orbán on TV saying that the election results are painful but clear. This feels momentous. #Hungary

Electoral vulnerability and women MPs’ estimation of voters’ preferences on women’s issues | European Journal of Political Research | Cambridge Core Electoral vulnerability and women MPs’ estimation of voters’ preferences on women’s issues

📢 Are women MPs better at estimating their party voters’ preferences on women’s issues? In our new paper (with @stefaniebailer.bsky.social and @breunig.eurosky.social), we analyze whether and under which conditions women MPs assess these preferences more accurately.

This figure shows weekly advertised jobs in politics in UK HEPs from 2012-2025. It reveals a clear decline in advertising from 2024 onwards: the average weekly number of advertised jobs is currently around half what it was in 2021. Note that in this figure a point represents an observation of a captured url and the trend line is estimated using a generalised additive model.

This figure presents the same data but allows for easier comparison across years by presenting the cumulative jobs advertised for each calendar year in our sample. This indicates again that both 2024 and 2025 have seen significantly fewer Politics and Government jobs advertised, with 2025 being the worst year on record with only 469 jobs advertised, compared to a mean of 836 jobs advertised a year between 2012 and 2024.

2025 was the worst on record in terms of new advertised jobs. Using jobs.ac.uk email alert data courtesy of @peterallen.bsky.social, we found 469 jobs compared to a mean of 836 between 2012-24.

Plus, Jimmie Åkesson's takes on being Swedish have moved from nationalist ("everyone should adhere to Swedish values") to nativist ("you need to have Swedish ancestors to be Swedish"). Very very dangerous move! SD is not deradicalizing anymore, rather the opposite.

In Europe, Democracy Erodes from the Right | Journal of Democracy When ordinary voters are given a choice between democracy and partisan loyalty, who will put democracy first? Frighteningly, Europe harbors a deep reservoir of authoritarian potential.

Det finns en naivetet i Sverige att våra högerpopulister är mer demokratiska än i andra länder. Det stämmer inte. SD-väljare straffar politiker med antidemokratiska tendenser i lika låg grad som väljare för PiS i Polen.

V-Dem v.16 is now released, w. updated scores for 2025.

Most countries remain stable from 2024, but some clear improvements (on diff’t democracy indices), incl. S. Korea, Sri Lanka & Mauritius.

Largest declines came, by far, in the US.

This figure shows 10-yr changes on the Liberal Dem. index.
