@peiferlabunc.bsky.social Beautiful day for a walk in Chapel Hill. Found this pine on my property. FWIW this tree is on an old fence line so barbed wire could have been involved.

So damn proud to be an American today, exercising my free speech and patriotic duty to represent our Constitution. The #nokings gathering in Hillsborough, NC was awesome.

No Kings Day protest in Hillsborough, NC. Good energy, great signs, and abundant patriotism.

I finished reading The Poisoner's Handbook just in time for last night's science writers book club (a group of us here in North Carolina, meeting for 20 years). Very much enjoyed this fascinating science history by @deborahb.bsky.social

Carrboro Restaurant Directory Find your next meal here in Carrboro!

One of my early jobs was editing the restaurant listings in Northern Ohio LIVE magazine, so it makes me happy to see this directory of Carrboro restaurants in The Carrborean: www.thecarrborean.com/carrboro-res...

I'm glad the intersection at the bottom of Smith Level has new pedestrian crossing lights and markings. Too many close calls down there.

Papercamp 4 looks like cool event. Wish I could get to London to join this. It's the type of conference that @10ch.bsky.social would like. www.designswarm.com/papercamp-4/

gilest.org: Everything I've written about 'working in the open'

Nice to see this new blog post from @gilestur.bsky.social - gilest.org/notes/wito.h... - I have multiple copies of The Agile Comms Handbook and even gave one to my colleague today. It's an excellent book and Giles is one to follow.

I stood up after my morning meditation, looked out the window to the wildflower garden below, and noticed this turtle so I walked outside to say hello.

Watched an episode of Ted Lasso (The Strings That Bind Us) and sure enough, there’s an embrace, this time between Sam and his father, Ola. The power of a hug - to show love, comfort, forgiveness, protection, or other bond - is a recurring theme across the show. To me, this is the power of the show.

One of the best shows I’ve been to recently was The Heavy Heavy (last year at Cat’s Cradle). Just saw the band will be back this way in September, at Motorco in Durham, so I snagged tickets for the family. Can’t wait. Fun band.

A New Podcast Revisits an Old Local Mystery: Who Killed Rachel Crook? Elizabeth Woodman's gripping podcast looks back at the 1951 murder of Rachel Crook, a mystery that's haunted Chapel Hill for decades.

This article by Sarah Edwards about Chapel Hill history (Crook's Corner) was fascinating. I had no idea about a murder decades before the famous restaurant. - A New Podcast Revisits an Old Local Mystery: Who Killed Rachel Crook? indyweek.com/culture/who-...

On my way to the mall to pick up my new suit, I caught a bit of the Sound Opinions show on our local public radio station, WUNC. A listener called in to hype the Irish bandDylan Flynn and the Dead Poets. Listening to their music on Spotify now. Running Away is bouncy good.

Biden admin. awarded a multi-million dollar resiliency grant to Hillsborough to move its facility away from the river. But Trump admin. cancelled it. Is this what they mean by "cancel culture"?

turtles

All the rain over the last few weeks has given me plenty of Eastern box turtles to note over on my Wan Smol Blog, smol.zuiker.com/categories/t.... This morning's turtle was old but spry.

Stopped by the Carrboro Farmers Market this morning. It's Tomato Day. Big crowd, piles and piles of tomatoes of all sizes, lots of smiles on new faces (UNC graduate students). Reminded me of my first visit in 2001. Love this market. Thank you, farmers. 🍅

Played soccer in Chatham County this evening. We finished just as storm arrived so my drive home to Chapel Hill in was harrowing in the deluge. Take care all.

I agree. That stretch of street as pedestrian only is great. An time it's that way I walk down the center line to own it.
