"[F]rom the 1940s to the 1970s, a Bell Labs job was said to be just like working at a research university, except the pay was better, the equipment was more up-to-date, the machine shop was available for all your needs and you didnโt have to spend time teaching or applying for research grants."
Picuture showing forthcoming book, called 'Keep your hair on: understanding urges to pick, pull and bite' by Clare Mackay, which will be launched in April 2026
Big news!
I loved researching and writing this book, which is all about shedding the shame, and getting really curious about urges to pick, pull and bite.
I can't wait to share it with you! It's out on April 2nd, and is available to pre-order now.

year after year, OSR has been given less and less, to a ridiculous 'solution' for this year
Hey, is it possible to filter the list of posters in the app by "favourite" (the ones we put a star on)?
Congratulations to Steve Smith @fmrib-steve.bsky.social for winning the OHBM 2025 Glass Brain Award! This lifetime achievement award recognises extraordinary contributions that drive the field forward - and we can't think of anyone more deserving. ๐๐๐
The Open Science Room has been an exciting space at the OHBM Meeting for many years, but its future is threatened. Please sign this petition to signal your support for preserving a dedicated space for the OSR at future meetings. ohbm.github.io/osr2025/peti...
It didn't fail. It is a very robust tool. We tested it with more than 67,000 T1ws. The Dice coefficient with our brain mask is below 0.9 for just 212 cases. That is a small number and it does not mean the result is bad. Just different from our brain mask. We just wanted to test more tools.
Thinking about physical space, the cortical surface and brain function. In cartography, different flat projections of the globe are used for different functional purposes (e.g., navigation, measurement, radar) each projection transforms space in different ways to achieve that purpose.
Looking for automated brain extraction tools that are:
- Quick and easy to install.
- Without "ugly" dependencies (big toolboxes, containers, matlab, etc).
- Easy to use.
- Quick to run (1/2 minutes).
- Not ROBEX, SynthStrip or FSL's BET (we already tested those).
Bluesky, do your magic!
Thanks!
Not the least bit bothered by pearl-clutching over social media filter bubbles or echo chambers. People use social media for all kinds of reasons, and "interacting with hostile dickheads" isnโt one of mine. Honestly, in todayโs political climate, I donโt see much value in unmoderated debate anyway.
Last week, NeuroImage invited me to join their team as Associate Editor, providing me an opportunity to put some perspectives into writing. I declined and clarified why. Here is the exchange as I wanted to share more broadly. www.thebrainblog.org/2023/11/23/i...
When you debate a person about something that affects them more than it affects you, remember that it will take a much greater emotional toll on them than on you. For you it may feel like an academic exercise. For them, it feels like revealing their pain only to have you dismiss their experience and sometimes their humanity. The fact that you might remain more calm under these circumstances is a consequence of your privilege, not increased objectivity on your part. Stay humble. -Sarah Maddox
Reminder:
Somebody asked me if I had plans for the fall. It took me a minute to realise she meant "Autumn" and not "The Collapse of Civilisation."
