This is irresponsible framing. The words "helped" and "provided" imply that Proton did this voluntarily, but they were required under Swiss law. I don't hear any information to indicate that they could have done anything differently.

You should clarify this. You're misrepresenting.

I love @404media.co but this framing misses the mark imho. @proton.me’s privacy protections are industry leading. But they operate I a jurisdiction and are required to follow the law. Which means that anonymity can’t be guaranteed if you pay by CC. Precisely the reason Proton supports cash payments

Time series chart showing the fraction of new car sales by year that are electric for China and selected other countries.

Time series chart showing the fraction of new car sales by year that are electric for China and selected other countries.

China knows the liability that oil import dependencies create, and how to play the long game.

New car sales in China have gone from 6% electric in 2020 to 51% electric in 2025.

This is large-scale industrial policy in service of national security goals.

We Will Not Be Divided Employees of Google and OpenAI stand together to refuse the Department of War's demands to use AI models for domestic mass surveillance and autonomous killing without human oversight.

Mass surveillance and autonomous killing should be uncontroversial red lines. Thanks #Anthropic for standing up.

Fascism For First Time Founders Over the last year or so I’ve seen a disturbing tendency in tech/startup/VC worlds to buy into the neoreactionary view that for startups to be successful they need to get on board the Trump t…

You know, it's funny. Earlier this week I had started to write a follow up to my "Fascism For First Time Founders" post that tried to explain to Silicon Valley how embracing fascists would destroy innovation... but now I need to spend the weekend rewriting the whole thing with a new Exhibit A.

@anthropic.com being threatened for objecting against Claude being used for mass surveillance and autonomous killing (!) is one thing (kudos to them!). But also important to note that OpenAI, XAI, and Google did not.

AI Safety Meets the War Machine Anthropic doesn’t want its AI used in autonomous weapons or government surveillance. Those carve-outs could cost it a major military contract.

A Response to the Decision to Rescind EPA's 2009 Endangerment Finding The AMS is a global community committed to advancing weather, water, and climate science and service.

AMS is deeply concerned by the repeal of EPA’s 2009 Endangerment Finding, which concluded greenhouse gas emissions harm health and well-being. The science remains clear: human-caused climate change is already causing harmful impacts.

Scientists no Longer Find Twitter Professionally Useful, and have Switched to Bluesky Synopsis. Social media has become widely used by the scientific community for a variety of professional uses, including networking and public outreach. For

Bluesky is the new science Twitter, new study by @whysharksmatter.bsky.social and Julia Wester concludes!

"Results show that for every reported professional benefit that scientists once gained from Twitter, scientists can now gain that benefit more effectively on Bluesky than on Twitter."

kind of funny that an olympian said they are here to represent "compassion, respect, and love for others" and some people automatically knew that was a statement against them

(2) PERSON 1: Over a decade into the replication crisis, we wanted to see if today’s studies have become more robust. (3) PERSON 1: Unfortunately, our replication analysis has found exactly the same problems that those 2010s researchers did.
