The U.S. has had presidents who used the military to distract from domestic disasters, fabricated pretexts for war, or showed apathy toward civilian casualties. But we have never had a president whose greatest loyalty appears to be to foreign backers, nor have we had a pan-warmonger as national security adviser in an administration with a barely functioning State Department. It is difficult to say whether the U.S. winning a war–in a conventional sense–is the goal of Trump and Bolton at all.
That may sound strange–Trump’s obsession with “winning” is infamous. But the winning is always more about Trump more than it is about the United States–and at times the concepts are mutually exclusive.
Great @sarahkendzior.bsky.social article from 2018 that could have been written today: www.fastcompany.com/40558314/don...

It was true under Biden and it’s still true, so far, under Trump. In terms if economic well-being, Americans have never had it so good. Yes, this is inflation adjusted.
People have a super visceral reaction to inflation, because it feels like prices are higher than they’re “supposed to be.” I notice it every time I’m in the United States: Oh my god, wasn’t a movie ticket supposed to be eight bucks?!
But that’s a psychologial blind spot. Incomes have gone up more. If the “middle class is disappearing” it’s becaise more and more people are getting rich. Trade and immigration and technology are good!
THANK YOU. I have an old friend who’s started posting about how *amazing* the US economy is doing and refuses to listen to anyone who tells him otherwise - it’s been like watching someone get sucked into QAnon

I genuinely think it’s a coincidence when Last Podcast on the Left and Behind the Bastards cover the same person at the same time, but when it happens TWICE in ~6 months it’s time for your teams to start talking!

Trump's Not Crazy - He's Crazy for Nukes
Trump's obsession with nuclear war is older than most Epstein victims
Great piece! I worry that the depletion of munitions will eventually give Trump the excuse he needs to use nuclear weapons against Iran. People forget that he’s been fixated on nuclear war since the ‘80s: open.substack.com/pub/mst3kati...

The older I get, the more I think “laziness” isn’t real
Instead, I see workers who are burnt out/underpaid and all sorts of folks struggling with depression, ADHD, etc. (often undiagnosed/untreated)
Even bad faith “laziness” usually has another cause (i.e. deadbeat husbands are just misogynists)

Screencap of an ad for Netflix Is A Joke Presents: Louis C.K. Ridiculous with a link to buy tickets
Thanks Netflix! I wanted to waste my hard earned money on expensive tickets to some of the “Netflix Is A Joke” shows, but you’re right - putting it in savings makes much more sense!

Makes sense! When I was young, I was told that both overpopulation *and* birth rates below replacement levels were bad things. Granted, the first lesson came from much better sources than the second, which I heard from the abusive libertarian shithead I dated in my teens (and yes, he was in his 20s)

So I know the birth rate discourse is often a misogynist or fascist dog whistle, but I realized today that I'd just accepted that falling birth rates were a Bad Thing. Looking into it, I now think that a) they can cause real short-term problems & b) smaller populations would be GREAT in the longrun

So I get why birth rates that fall well below replacement levels cause problems for a country (i.e. fewer taxpayers and caregivers to support a large elderly population), but isn’t the ethical way to address this just encouraging immigration and raising taxes on billionaires & corporations?

(just came back to add that I didn't come up with the Frozen example on my own - I heard it on an old Cracked podcast a million years ago but I forget exactly who said it)

as an example - that movie made an obscene amount of money, so why didn’t it lead to a million animated films starring 2 sisters/princesses? My friend who’s worked in animation for 15+ years chimed in to agree with me, saying she’s literally heard execs say “I just can’t imagine 2 female leads”

Excellent thread! Reminds me of a misunderstanding of the entertainment industry - folks think execs are 100% profit driven, but, while $ is of course a priority, they also tend to be bigoted white men who let their biases get in the way of profit. I once made this point at a party, using Frozen…

With last night's ceasefire declaration, I'm curious if folks are seeing any articles/pundits/etc confidently claim that nukes were never on the table. Has that been popping up in anyone's feeds?

The bad takes are RANK today so I’m gonna take a break from Bluesky but first some parting words:
Trump is NOT erratic, he’s actually incredibly predictable when you remember that he acts like a mob boss, an abusive partner, and a friend to international thugs (especially Putin & Netanyahu)

Journalist and author Sarah Kendzior isn't surprised by Trump's open dialogue about the possibility of using nuclear arms. She says it falls right in line with his history of wanting to work with Russian president Vladimir Putin.
"Trump has been interested in nuclear weapons since at least 1984, where he said he learned everything he needs to know about them within an hour and a half of studying them," Kendzior told Russ McNamara live on WWJ Newsradio 950.
I know everyone’s understandably stressed out but PLEASE stop blaming Trump’s nuclear threats on his supposed dementia, instability, etc. One of his most consistent interests has been nuclear weapons, as @sarahkendzior.bsky.social has been warning about since 2016: www.cbsnews.com/detroit/news...

Came back to this old post cuz I now have a better understanding of what people mean when they say there are no mid-tier comedies anymore. It specifically refers to studio comedies that don’t have a massive budget but *do* get a theatrical release nationwide. THAT’S the thing we rarely see anymore
