Summary:
1. We are in neutral conditions and will likely remain that way for several months.
2. An El Niño is likely (61% chance) to emerge, but magnitude is still quite uncertain as we have not crossed spring predictability barrier.

This was a tough one to write, and I took a bit of a personal risk sharing my own career-long process of discovery from tentatively swayed by the potential for deep-sea mining to convinced that we are simply not ready.
In his analysis, @drandrewthaler.bsky.social traces a shift in his own thinking—from cautious openness to firm opposition. The deeper he looked, the clearer it became: we cannot move forward with deep-sea mining without risking irreversible harm to a wilderness we barely understand.
