So far, 47 participants from 25 countries signed up to take part in our global bioturbation experiment across freshwater, terrestrial and marine ecosystems. No prior experience needed and we’ll send you a bioturbation kit - to join in, sign up here: www.thermalecologyalliance.org/projects

We are co-ordinating global bioturbation study across freshwater, terrestrial and marine ecosystems. We’ll send you everything you need, and experiment will be very simple. Sign up to be part of it by clicking on the bioturbation project here: www.thermalecologyalliance.org/projects.
It will be, will save significant time, and all layers free to use. You are going to like it Tom! Going to be great to look at spatial data within the wider context of what’s going on. More papers on their way building on this work, watch this space.
*NEW* We’ve just released 337 harmonised layers from 35 sources capturing human pressures, heritage features, ecological assets and net-ocean conditions for UK waters.

🌊 How do seafloor activities like bottom trawling affect the ocean’s carbon cycle—and climate policy?
🎧 In our latest #PolicyPod, we speak with Southampton’s @profbenthos.bsky.social & Prof. Susan Gourvenec about the NERC-funded C-Floor project.

NEW PAPER - we add co-extinctions and co-compensation to our extinction models to establish plausible biodiversity-function trajectories across a climate change gradient.
Was great to have opportunity to present my perspectives on how biodiversity can contribute to ecosystem futures at @ulaval.ca Thank you to all that attended.
Biodiversity-function curves change from expectation when co-extinctions and co-compensatory responses are taken into account. See our *NEW PAPER* exploring these changes across an Arctic climatic gradient here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
Finally somebody recognised what we do! 😂
Although assessing the extent and role of biogenic sediment mixing in the fossil record has been informed by knowledge of bioturbation in modern oceans, extrapolating concepts and quantifying proxies is problematic. We offer our perspectives in our new paper: pubs.geoscienceworld.org/sepm/palaios...
Excited….new bit of kit leaving USA right now to help in our quest to quantify bioturbation. What could it be? Answer to follow, add your guess in reply.
Fork lifting in the first few of our intact macrofaunal sediment communities ! Thanks team, great day, and plenty of exciting data to come for our NERC funded Ecowind project (ecological effects of offshore wind).
One way business can adjust is to carbon costing and control through activity-based emissions accounting. Read our report here: www.aicpa-cima.com/cpd-and-lear...

Must read out this week…
Great to make observations throughout an entire offshore wind farm to investigate the ecological effects of offshore wind expansion in our shelf seas. Fieldwork led by @krysiamazik.bsky.social and looking forward to receiving intact communities for follow-up lab experiments.
Eat. Sleep. Sieve. Repeat.
Launched our new NERC C-Floor project on the effects of bottom fishing, and other human activities on benthic carbon stocks with collaborators from @pml.ac.uk, @exetermarine.bsky.social, @uniofeastanglia.bsky.social, and @noc.ac.uk, with policy and impact facilitated by @publicpolicyuos.bsky.social
Invitation to join our bioturbation starter pack
Do you work on bioturbation? If yes, come join the conversation.
Nice summary of terrestrial bioturbation by some major groups below. Add to this marine bioturbation (see here for global map: www.cell.com/current-biol... and we soon realise that virtually all of the planet is reworked continuously by a diversity of fauna.
This is what we are measure! A worm & our sand used to measure burrowing. We link this to functioning on the seafloor. We're almost done!
