I know this is true. I've known it for a while. I still have trouble believing it each time I see it because it is so mind boggling.
This is the fourth largest economy in the world.

"The flaring volumes reported by LNG Canada to the regulator are around 50 per cent higher than estimates for the world’s most polluting LNG export terminals in 2024"
NEW | Record exports of solar, batteries and EVs last month 📈
China’s exports for the ‘new three’ industries reached a record high of $21.9bn in March 2026, up 70% year-on-year, in the wake of the US-Israel war with Iran and changing export rebates for solar and batteries.
Thanks indeed to @financialtimes.com for publishing me on the anti-US turn of the European right. From moderate conservatives to nationalist radicals, it is nimbly shifting towards a politics of autonomy. The centre and left must move fast - or risk being outflanked.

Great thread
The Global Progressive Mobilisation just concluded here in Barcelona. An impressively global gathering - with representatives from Europe & US but also across Latin America, Africa, Asia. My observations:
Over just five days, the justices had decided the issue. Even as they debated the Obama plan’s possible burden on the power industry, in the entire chain of correspondence obtained by The Times, not a single justice, conservative or liberal, mentioned the dangers of a warming planet as one of the possible harms the court should consider.
Another data point in “originalism is a fraud.” So much for the law is the law we can’t think about the impact. They rail against “results oriented judging” in public but when their corporate clients make requests they know exactly what to do. www.nytimes.com/2026/04/18/u...
Waking up to discover that evidence has been released proving something we all knew. The Supreme Court's efforts to stop the Obama clean power plant rules were rooted in explicit, corrupt efforts to protect the fossil fuel industry.
Asia was supposed to be an enormous growth market for LNG.
Not anymore. Shortages, spiking prices, massive uncertainty. Asia is moving to renewables instead

gas processing facilities like this are all over the Permian. Methane blasting out of flare stacks. This is where Europe gets its gas
Schumer cant really claim to be against the war if he continues shipping weapons to israel for its various ethnic cleansing campaigns
Think about this: The leader of the Senate Democrats just voted against 85% of his caucus all to keep sending bulldozers to Israel, so it can continue to demolish Palestinian and Lebanese people's homes.
This village uses its solar income on free communal lunches, buses and other communal efforts.“If you divide money as individual income, people feel disconnected. People who didn’t know each other for years now get to know each other within days”
I love everything about this.
Peter Magyar displaying a ruthlessness that Biden and Starmer seem devoid of
Magyar is a centre-right figure strait out of Christian Democratic central casting, but he understands the need that while punching to the left and centre might sometimes be necessary, what unites his voter coalition is punching against the populist Far Right with performative enthusiasm
The state’s legislation could provide a blueprint for others considering moratoriums, amid growing pushback across the country to the rapid rollout of infrastructure underpinning the build-out of AI. ft.trib.al/bb7koE6
- Increases and prolongs reliance on fossil (so next crisis hurts even more)
- Often doesn't pass through to consumers (fossil co's just pocket it)
- Benefits enjoyed more by the rich (who drive bigger cars longer distances)
- Decreases gov't revenue so you end up paying for it in different ways
excellent piece
Interesting thread here, on a topic I've never seen anyone else address...

"In power, solar plus storage now costs below $60 per megawatt hour (MWh) at a global level. The variable cost of LNG-fired power in Asia, at $20 per million British thermal units (MMBtu), exceeds $160 per MWh – nearly three times the cost of never needing fuel again."
Any questions?
the disconnect is staggering

France 🇫🇷 doubles electrification support to €10bn/year through 2030 — EVs, heat pumps, industry.
The reason?
The Strait of Hormuz crisis making fossil fuel dependence impossible to ignore.
Geopolitical shocks don’t just raise prices. They change what’s politically possible.
This morning’s Strait of Hormuz developments, summarized so you don’t need to read the president’s rambling morning long-posts:
