People across Lebanon were holding their breath for a ceasefire agreement, but a wave of deadly strikes plunged the country into panic and chaos. Many who had begun thinking of the moment when they might return to their homes have been rushing to streets and hospitals, searching for missing loved ones or seeking a safety that feels increasingly out of reach.”
We are outraged by the devastating death and destruction in densely populated areas across Lebanon today following intensified military operations.

Today marks one year since eight on-duty Palestine Red Crescent Society medics, alongside seven other first responders, were killed at Tel al-Sultan in Gaza. It marks one year of their absence from the lives of loved ones, family, friends, and colleagues. Our thoughts are with them today – and with all first responders killed before and since 23 March 2025. Too many have lost their lives doing live-saving work. International humanitarian law could not be clearer: health and aid workers are not a target. They must be respected and protected in all circumstances. To save lives, they must be able to reach those who need medical care. They must be able to do so safely. We call for this law to be upheld.
📍 Gaza | One year has passed since the killing of 8 medics from the Palestine Red Crescent Society and 7 other first responders. Our thoughts are with their loved ones today.
Humanitarian workers must be able to carry out their work in safety.
One year ago, eight medics from the Palestine Red Crescent Society were killed on duty in Gaza.
They were responding to wounded people, they were humanitarians dedicated to saving lives. Their ambulances were clearly marked; their red uniforms should have protected them.
We must #ProtectHumanity.

#MentalHealthMatters
The IFRC condemns the killing of Lebanese Red Cross volunteer paramedic Youssef Assaf, who succumbed to the injuries he sustained while carrying out his humanitarian duty to assist and save lives.
The heavy loss of life is alarming. Civilian infrastructure has been affected, and many homes have been severely damaged by the hostilities. Daily life in Tehran has been profoundly disrupted: children are not attending school, and many businesses have temporarily closed as a precaution due to the ongoing strikes. Normally, this is a time when cities across Iran are filled with excitement as families prepare for Nowruz, the Iranian New Year. This year, however, families are gathering for funerals instead of festivities. Our partners – the Iranian Red Crescent Society – are on the ground responding to immediate needs. They themselves have sadly suffered casualties while carrying out their life-saving work. Our own teams are also struggling daily to stay safe during heavy strikes, and ICRC staff members have been displaced, along with their families. Nevertheless, we stand ready to reinforce our support for the IRCS by sending in supplies and specialized staff.”
📍 Iran | Lives lost, homes destroyed, and daily routines shattered. At a time when families should be preparing for Nowruz, many are instead mourning loved ones.
Vincent Cassard, ICRC head of delegation in Tehran, shares.

"Widening hostilities across the Middle East are putting civilian lives in grave danger. The scale of major military operations flaring across the Middle East risks embroiling the region – and beyond – into another large-scale armed conflict that will overwhelm any humanitarian response. Without urgent steps to de-escalate the situation and respect the rules of war, further civilian lives will be lost. Civilians are already suffering the consequences of war. All parties to armed conflict have an obligation to uphold the rules of war, which are unequivocal. Civilians and civilian infrastructure must be spared from hostilities. Schools must remain sanctuaries for learning where children can feel safe and protected from attacks, and hospitals must remain sanctuaries for saving lives. Medical personnel and first responders, such as the Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies, must be protected in all circumstances and be able to carry out their work safely. All parties must allow and facilitate safe and unrestricted access for impartial humanitarian assistance to reach those in need."

The IFRC is following closely and is deeply concerned about the recent escalation of hostilities in the Middle East.
