Co-existing with beavers: Corvallis, nonprofits try new tactic in bypassing dams Groups turned to a solution that's helped communities across the country trying to protect beaver habitat while allowing humans to do their thing. The fix: putting a notch in the dam, then surrounding it with a cage big enough for passing fish but not for beavers to get in and repair it.

A popular path along Mulkey Creek in Corvallis recently became flooded after beavers built a dam in the area. That prompted several groups to look for a solution that would allow the beavers to remain busy in the area but keep the path open for public use.

In between rain showers, I got out for some tide pooling with @brookeweigel.bsky.social & her class. Left foot soaked, totally worth it. 🦑

Blazers owner Tom Dundon doesn’t care that others say he’s cheap When it comes to everything outside the locker room, the Blazers will be cheap. And they won't follow the widely accepted norms of the NBA.

Wait you're telling me the owner of the Blazers, "a billionaire who made his money in the sub-prime auto loan business," is now running the Blazers like a subprime autoloan company? GTFO.

(Sorry Portland you're screwed. Enjoy being the 80s/90's Clippers for a while.) www.nytimes.com/athletic/721...

The US cattle industry is eating its own tail From rising temperatures to water shortages, ranchers need to be thinking about a plan B

Excellent analysis: "The reality is that the cattle industry is eating its own tail — using up the very resources it needs to sustain itself. It is a clear example of “double materiality” — whereby an industry is the victim of the physical risks it creates for itself."

Monterey Park becomes the first city in California to ban "all data centers within city limits" Residents of the small enclave east of LA not only killed their city's proposed 250,000 square foot data center, they pushed city council to ban them altogether

Last night, after an hours-long public hearing, Monterey Park became the first city in California to pass an ordinance permanently banning data centers.

The city council voted unanimously to declare data centers a public nuisance, and to "prohibit all data centers within city limits."

The last week in "Soccer and Politics" will be devoted to Colombia, a fascinating country (I hope to visit soon) with a complex and ongoing relationship between organized crime, politics, and soccer.

This is a great primer on the narco-soccer that dominated the country in the late-20th century.

New @etsc.eu report says cycling not being made safe enough, fast enough across EU. What's needed? Report says more urban 20mph, more protected cycle lanes & safe junctions etc. Full report: www.etsc.eu/pinflash50
