🇺🇸🇨🇳🇪🇺 As US-China rivalry deepens, Washington is rethinking European unity - not just, as this new article by Linde Desmaele argues, as a NATO asset, but through the lens of cost tolerance and alignment on China.

💭 Cold War-era nuclear thinking can help explain how today’s challenges emerged.
📝 But @lindedesma.bsky.social warns that uncritical reliance on outdated frameworks leads to misguided policies on #NuclearWeapons.

Bedankt voor dit draadje! :)
Last month, I wrote a short piece on what Trump 2.0 means for NATO and Europe. Bottom line: The key question is not so much whether Donald Trump stays in NATO or reaffirms the U.S. commitment to Europe, but under what terms and with what expectations.

Een gebrouilleerde relatie met Amerika, de oorlog in Oekraïne: er vallen harde noten te kraken tijdens de NAVO-top in juni in Den Haag. Wat staat er op het spel, wat kunnen we van de uitkomst verwachten? Drie Leidse wetenschappers blikken vooruit.

A huge thank you to the editorial team at NPR for their invaluable support in bringing this piece to fruition! (8/8)
By focusing on these functions, I draw attention to the main barriers that produce continuity and complicate changes in NATO’s nuclear posture - either to upgrade or downgrade the TNW mission. (7/8)
3. Nuclear consultation: the practice of ensuring ongoing transatlantic political linkage due to the continued US presence in Europe. (6/8)
2. Nuclear legitimation: the practice of reinforcing the alliance’s commitment to nuclear deterrence as the basis for NATO’s overall defense strategy. (5/8)
1. Nuclear deflection: the practice of shifting the focus away from questions relating to the responsibilities, costs, and obligations of the conventional-weapons aspect of collective defense. (4/8)
In this piece, I suggest that the importance of such functions seems to have overstated. I take a different perspective and argue that US TNW in Europe are primarily tools of alliance management. I examine three key mechanisms through which they fulfill this role. (3/8)
Advocates and opponents of NATO’s TNW mission often focus primarily on the value of these weapons in terms of deterrence or reassurance (arguments that primarily adhere to a military logic). (2/8)
