I take care of children who DIE of conditions that we can’t prevent and that despite our very best efforts we cannot cure.

The fact that CHILDREN DIE of diseases that can be completely eradicated with safe and effective vaccines makes me LIVID.

This is what amounts to an ILLEGAL & indiscriminate funding cut for research centers everywhere. It will mean shuttering labs across the country, layoffs in red & blue states, and derailing lifesaving research on everything from cancer to opioid addiction.

We all need to speak out to save lives.

They are coming after scientists. Everyone should care about this. The next cure or lifesaving device may not get discovered.

I ran @USAID health programs for the last 3 years. Trump’s 90 day Stop Work Order on foreign assistance does serious damage to the world and the US. Examples:🧵

Opinion | I’m a health researcher. NIH’s pause on research grants could have a devastating cost. This is a potentially devastating event — not just for the scientific community, but for all Americans.

I hope University Presidents who like to cozy up to their state’s GOP electeds are on the phone this morning fighting for science.

And I hope they learn a lesson or two about using their power for good in the future.

NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sections—the independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research.

Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions

The Pediatrician’s Lament | NEJM With U.S. politics threatening to erase the gains of science, reduce access to vaccines, and undermine their vast public health benefit, what is a conscientious pediatrician to do?

via nejm.org - 'Some will ask, “Can you recommend a good pediatrician who does not believe in #vaccines?”

No, I say, no more than I can recommend a good physicist who does not believe in gravity.'

I know it’s obvious, but I think it’s still worth saying out loud:

Someone who wants to end fact checking wants to be able to lie to you without detection.

When lies are undetected, they start to shape our reality. We’re a lot more vulnerable when we can’t tell that a lie is a lie.

My friends in the Dementia world. Please read this and consider what the effects on healthcare for people with Alzheimer’s disease in England would have been if NICE had approved lecanemab and donanemab for NHS use. And, of course, they don’t have clinical efficacy, anyway!

I will never stop being aghast that the United States built a higher education system that was literally the envy of the entire world—our bitterest political enemies nonetheless sent their children to us to be educated, it was so good—& then just decided to systematically, ruthlessly dismantle it

Since everyone’s finding old and new friends, take a moment to read my story, I’m a 32yo polio survivor because I was not vaccinated. Pass on my story, repeat it, tell it to any vaccine hesitate parent. No kid deserves vaccine preventable diseases
