Announcing martial law and attempting a quasi-coup on the very foundation of South Korea's politics with an approval rating of 25% is honestly wild

South Korea Is Fighting for Democracy Again—And the World Needs to Know Last updated December 3, 10:09 AM South Korea Is Fighting for Democracy Again—And the World Needs to Know Heesoo Jang Assistant Professor of Media Law and Ethics Journalism Department, University of...

I was preparing to pitch an op-ed on the nationwide protests calling for President Yoon's resignation, aiming to provide global context amid the limited international coverage.

Given the urgency, I’m sharing it now. I didn’t expect events to escalate this quickly. #SouthKorea #Democracy

Anyway thanks for coming to my TEDTalk. Sorry for being a little dramatic, I can't really help it I'm afraid

I think the owners and founders of *most* media companies haven't been able to crack the puzzle that is the business model they ought to go with when running a news organisation. Relying on ad revenue evidently hasn't worked out, and most people don't want to pay for the news.

I'm terrified. This is the only industry I've ever really worked in. But as time goes by and the internet continues to grow (and inevitably divide us), I can't help but feel like this... exodus(?) of journalists, mainstream and independent, is going to go on and on and on.

At least 8,000 journalism jobs were cuts in UK and North America in 2023. We've already seen as much as 3,000 jobs in the media industry disappear so far this year (again, we're only two months in.)

It's been announced that VICE Media is probably going to shut down, leaving "several hundred" without jobs in a matter of days.

I myself was laid off from my previous news company back in October last year before they inevitably ended editorial operations a month later.

A few days ago, I posted a thread on twitter outlining the media layoffs we've seen so far in 2024 (and we're only two months in). That list had 22 companies in it. Today it turned into 23.

Day 2 of breaking my COVID virginity. Here's what happened:

- Lost my voice
- My whole body hurts
- I'm coughing like a maniac
- Everything is cold and hot at the same time
- It's 33°C outside and my A/C unit decides now is a great time to stop working
