Cycling in Graz (“Austria’s cycling capital") is general good. Infrastructure is not up to Dutch standards, but here’s my top 5 things other cities could do.

I don’t think we talk nearly enough about the fact that corporations like Amazon, don’t pay a single cent to maintain the roads they use, the transportation system they use, the courts they use, they pay nothing for the infrastructure that is absolutely critical to their business.

One part of the Swiss Cheese was the gig worker running the red; the other was the pedestrian wearing inappropriate headphones in a city centre and not looking for traffic when their hearing was impaired.
Remove either of those and the near miss wouldn't have happened.
By all means, listen to music while walking, but keep it to earphones, not headphones, and only have it in one ear. Either that or use bone conduction.
There's no such thing as an accident. It's a collection of events that align to result in a collision, also known as the Swiss Cheese model.
However, when you isolate yourself entirely from the world around you, you are unnecessarily putting yourself and others in danger. If it had been a car, they would have been hit; they only avoided being hit *because* it was a bike.
Walking back from the coffee shop this morning, I saw a near miss (less than 10cm) between a gig worker on a bike and a pedestrian. It was a green light for pedestrians, but the only person who was nearly hit was the idiot who had full size headphones. Now let me be clear; it was the rider's fault.
Can we finally agree that burning wood for energy is a terrible idea and won't be carbon neutral, let alone carbon negative, in our lifetimes? BECCS using wood certainly shouldn't qualify as CO₂ removal (CDR).
If I'd been able to treat it as a give way (definitely not advocating for blowing through reds; that's stupid) I could have been well out of their way by the time the light went green for cars.
Getting through a junction ahead of cars means you don't end up with what happened this morning to me; getting to the ASL and then the driver behind aggressively overtaking as the light went green because how dare someone in a bike get in front of them.
I think it's a combination of them following the car in front of them & impatience. For a group that claim to love driving, they sure as hell seem to want it to be over as quickly as possible.
I have mixed feelings on people on bikes and reds. I can see the logic in them being treated as give ways.
Reddit posts like this just make me ever more sure that riding a bike on the carriageway in traffic for several lessons should be a mandatory part of getting a driving licence.
It isn't a skill issue; it's an empathy and lack of experience problem.

The perfect illustration of why these types of initiatives are a waste of time. We did several school ‘speedwatch’ days etc. & as soon as you leave more cars are speeding. Pointless. All roads in a whole area outside schools should be fully filtered school streets.

That said, it’s still absolutely legitimate to refer to the UK as a grouping, just along as you don’t accidentally treat the data for England and Wales as synonymous for the whole of the UK.

To be fair to them, there are three data groupings: England and Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Each collect data independently from the others and use slightly different metrics. So it isn’t as clean one-to-one as it might seem at first. The census is a good example of that.
Nothing else says pedestrians are third class citizens in the UK than being made to wait at a pelican crossing for so long (because it only changes when there are no cars approaching) that your Apple Watch asks if you finished your walk.
